There is NO written work assigned over the summer. GOALS: Students are challenged to THINK about the books they read. Students will make connections between the books and their lives, their world, and other books they have read. FEATURES OF SUMMER READING JOURNEY: Students receive copies of the reading lists, in their Reading classes. Extra copies will be available during the summer in the grade level offices. This information will also be available on the VMS website. SUMMER READING ASSESSMENT: This year, on Friday, September 7th, the second day of school, students will be given an IN-CLASS written assessment on their summer books. They will be encouraged to bring their books to class and use them while they are writing. They will choose one question or prompt, from 12 choices, and write an essay, with a minimum of 8-10 sentences. These questions encourage the students to think critically about: the plot, characters, theme, making connections, and other topics. This written assessment enables students to do their own original work. The written evaluation will be counted as the first QUIZ grade of the year in Reading class. 8th graders taking Foreign Language are also required to complete the summer reading requirements, and complete the written assessment.
