Adding eBooks to the Amazon Kindle from Overdrive In order to get Overdrive ebooks onto your Kindle, you'll first need to create an account with Amazon and register your Kindle device. Kindle Fire users can download the Overdrive Media Console app instead. From the library website, visit the eBooks page (from the eBranch tab) and either click the image or the Overdrive Audio and eBooks link. On the Overdrive website, select a Kindle-compatible title. For your convenience, you can select Advance Search and have Overdrive display only Kindle books. To do this from the Advance Search screen, select Kindle Book from the Format menu. You can also choose to specifically show only those titles that are not checked out. Find a book! You'll know if a title is available if a Borrow button is displayed. If the book is unavailable, a Place A Hold button will appear instead. Before borrowing the item, select the duration of your checkout (1 or 2 weeks) and make sure that Kindle Book is listed under Available formats. Click Borrow and, if you haven't done so already, sign in to Overdrive by selecting Newport Beach Public Library from the drop down menu and type in your 14 digit library card (with no spaces). After signing in, you'll be taken to your Bookshelf. To get your book, click the Download button and then choose Kindle Book from the list of formats. After making your selection, click the Confirm & Download link and you will be taken to Amazon's website. In order to get the best downloading experience possible, make sure you are signed into the account used to register your Kindle. Click Get Library Book and choose which device you want the book sent to (in the event you have multiple devices registered to your account). Amazon will tell you that the book is ready to download via their wireless service. Turn on your Kindle and go to the Archived Items screen. Find your book, download it and enjoy! Overdrive titles can be renewed if the title has not been placed on hold. Ebooks can be returned early from the Manage Your Content and Devices page located in the Your Account drop down menu on the Amazon website. First Generation Kindle Users If you purchased the Kindle when it was first released, you will not be able to download books wirelessly. Instead, you will use the USB cable that came with your device to transfer books to your Kindle. Follow the instructions above on how to search for Kindle books. When you click Get Library Book from the Amazon page, you will be asked to download the book onto your computer. Connect the Kindle to your computer using the USB cable provided. PC users, your Kindle will appear as a drive within My Computer. Mac users, the Kindle drive will appear on the desktop. Open the Kindle drive and click and drag the file you downloaded from Amazon into the Documents folder. Once file has been copied, disconnect the Kindle from your computer and you're all set! .
