The bibliography is meant to be selective and emphasizes scholarly publications. Compared to an earlier edition, unpublished dissertations are covered more extensively and the number of contributions of Mexican scholars has been expanded significantly. Documents are indexed by descriptive term and by subject field. A list of 64 Chicano periodicals is included.. An even more comprehensive third edition is planned. In fact, we have purposely included some studies whose theses have been rebutted as examples of the state of public opinion, public policy, and the level of scholarship as it related to the Chicano in different time periods. Had the contributors been writing reviews rather than annotations, many of the studies included herein would have been handled more harshly than they have been. We have included lists of journals and newspapers to which readers may refer for representative comment on studies that have shown a lack of awareness of certain major aspects of Chicano culture. The second editionof the Mexican Amciican Bibliography. represents a substantial revision of the first edition which appeared in 1969. The volume contains approximately two hundred additional annotations. Unpublished dissertations not treatedin the earlier edition, are here covered extensively. The number of contributions of Mexican scholars to Chicano Studies has been expanded significantly. The index has been made more useful, we believe, by including bibliographies and by cross-listing of entries when appropriate. Some annotations appearing in the first edition have been modified in order to provide a more uniform format. This bibliography makes no pretense of being all-inclusive. On the contrary, it is meant to be selective; and the emphasis is very definitely on scholarly publications. It could hardly have been otherwise, given our limited financial resources. Undoutteclly, we committed oversights in not including certain crucial studies. We look forward to producing a more comprehensive third edition and invite suggestions that may help us in attaining that objective. Many individuals contributed to making this second edition possible. Maria Baeza, graduate student in Latin American Studies, assumed the onerous task of reading many unpublished doctoral dissertations available only on microfilm. Arturo Pacheco, graduate student in the School of Education, I did an outstanding job in researching and selecting materials in the field of education. Carl Vasquez, graduate student in Political Science, traveled to Mexico in search of material on the Chicano in the libraries of Mexico City and contributed many thoughtful ideas that made this bibliography a better document than it would otherwise have been. Ben Martinez, graduate student in Political Science, is owed a special debt of gratitude both for the number of his thoughtful contributions and for his diligence and cooperativeness at the editorial end. Manuel Cisneros, senior in Political x Science, provided invaluable assistance in preparing the index and compiling the list of Chicano periodicals. Al Lopez of the Stanford Chicano Press was of immeasurable assistance in designing the volume and cover. Those of us primarily responsible for the second edition express our thanks to John J. Johnson, who initiated the effort that led to the first edition and who participated in the early stages of the planning of the second edition. We also wish to express our appreciation to Mrs. Janet Dubbs who helped in so many ways with both editions of the bibliography and to Miss Rosemary Sedillo and Miss Lilian Charles for their assistance in producing this edition. The project was funded through a contract from the Office of Education, Institute of International Studies of the United States Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, and through the Provost's Office of Stanford University. Itis hoped that the bibliography will be of use to Chicano students in fulfilling their educational aspirations and commitment to the Chicano community and itis to them that the bibliography is dedicated. Luis G. Nogales Stanford University xi PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION Literature on the Mexican American or Chicano,.erms that are used interchangeably herein, is increasing significantlyboth in quality and quantity. Bibliographies have kept pace with thesedevelopments, for the most part. To our knowledge, however,no annotated guide to outstanding printed works on the Mexican Americanhas been published recently. We feel that this bibliographymeets the growing need for such a guide. It contains 274 annotationsof works we considered to be the best of the approximately 1000studies originally considered for inclusion, of which 600were actually examined. The Guide is designed for use by both the specialistand the informed layman. With but few exceptions, theselections are readily available in college and university libraries. Quiteintentionally, the bibliography focuses upon the contemporary interests andconcerns of the Mexican-American community but doesjustice, we feel, to contributions of an earlier generation of scholars and publicistsin the field of Mexican-American studies. Most entries appear because of their scholarly merit, some because they are the best sources in the areas theycover. The social sciences are far better represented than the humanitiesnot because we would necessarily have it that way but because of thenature of the
