January 24, 2016 3 p.m. The Wind Ensemble & Wind Symphony of Olmsted Falls High School will perform on this stage at Severance Hall. SEVERANCE HALL PERFORMANCE On Sunday, January 24th at 3 p.m. the Wind Ensemble and Wind Symphony will perform on the stage of Severance Hall, the same stage the world famous Cleveland Orchestra calls home. Olmsted Falls’ bands, along with high school bands of Akron Firestone, Avon and Nordonia, will participate in the Northeast Ohio Band Invitational XIII that is sponsored by the Cleveland Youth Wind Symphony (CYWS). Concert Winds and Symphonic Winds band of the Cleveland Youth Wind Symphony II will also perform at this event. This day-long event begins at 2 p.m. “I am thrilled for Olmsted Falls students to have the opportunity to play at Severance Hall, one of the most prestigious concert halls in the world,” says Julie Budd, director of bands at OFHS. “This will be a wonderful memory for the students and families. It is an honor to have been selected for this concert. I am very proud of all of the students and looking forward to the performance.” Senior trumpet player and band co-president Max Molkentin is also excited about this upcoming performance. “Having the opportunity to play at Severance Hall is a great experience for everyone who is going. I can’t wait to per- form there!” said Max. This is Olmsted Falls’ second appearance in this festival at Severance Hall. Olmsted Falls participated in the 2008 in- vitational. While this will be the first time for majority of the band students to perform at Severance Hall, four band students have performed on this famed stage. Senior Claire Barratt is a mem- ber of the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra (COYO). Junior piccolo and flute player Megan Green is a member of the Cleveland Youth Wind Symphony I. Sophomore flute player Emily Kovach and sophomore trumpet player Colleen Gabeau are members of the Cleveland Youth Wind Symphony II- Concert Winds. All of these ensembles perform at Severance Hall. “This is my second year in COYO playing bassoon and contrabas- soon. It's great to be able to rehearse and perform at Severance,” says Claire Barratt. “I love going out into the hall when I'm not playing to Claire Barratt (on the right) listen. It's a really cool experience to see and hear from the balcony. I suggest family and friends coming to see Olmsted Falls perform to check it out!” Megan Green General admission is $10. OMEA DISTRICTS IV & VII HONORS FESTIVAL Thirteen Olmsted Falls High School band and choral students participated in the 2015 OMEA Dis- trict IV & VII Honors Festival on November 13th and 14th at Cleveland State University. The stu- dents were involved in rehearsals that included two bands and one large choral group on Friday, No- vember 13th and followed by a concert on the following Saturday. Jake Conder, Sydney Martin, Kyle Erickson, Carson Moore and Ryan Miller (pictured) participated in the Honors Choir conducted by Sandra Snow a professor at Michigan State University. Morgan Finau and Megan participated in the “Vikings” Honors Band which was conducted by Dr. Birch Browning, a professor at Cleveland State Uni- versity. Seth Bennett, Sam Cooper, Taylor Hannah, Max Molkentin, Christina Pedicini and Caitlynn Webb participated in the “Hawks” Honors Band conducted by Glen Adsit, a professor at University of Hart- ford. Both bands had the privilege of each playing a song whose composer was in attendance at the festi- val (and is a native of Northeast Ohio). The Vikings Honors Band played Grand Mesa and the Hawks Honors Band played A Great Lakes Fanfare; both composed by Eric Ewazen. For the Hawks Honors Band, this was an extra special opportunity as this was the world premiere of the playing of A Great Lakes Fanfare. Eric Ewazen grew up in Middleburg Heights and attended Midpark High School. He is currently a professor at Julliard. After the concert, Max Molkentin and his grandparents Ingrid and Al Timar got a chance to speak with Mr. Ewazen. The Timar’s live in Middleburg Heights. “It was cool that the composer lived in Middleburg Hts. and that he was talking to my grandparents who live in Middleburg Hts. and they knew where he lived and that house is very close to theirs, ” said Max. “I loved playing the piece A Great Lakes Fanfare because I could really imagine the Great Lakes while playing the song.” Max Molkentin & Eric Ewazen Congratulations to all of the participants. CAROLING TOUR 2015 The Olmsted Falls Middle School Golden Harmonies performed holiday music to the residents at Kemper House, Village of the Falls, Renaissance, Emerald Village, Brookdale, and Orchards. They also performed at the Olmsted Falls and Olmsted Township’s Tree Lighting ceremonies as well as at various places in Grand Pacific Junction.
