Fantasy Mock Trial Outline: Commonwealth v. Joker This is a criminal case involving the charges of Arson, Possession of Weapons of Mass Destruction and Conspiracy. Joker allegedly tries to blow up city hall by putting dynamite close to the steps of city Hall. Commissioner Gordon was notified of the dynamite by an anonymous call who said the dynamite was set to explode within minutes. Commissioner Gordon quickly signaled for Batman through the bat signal and then immediately went to City Hall. When he got there he saw someone in a mask running away. Worried that he wasn’t going to have enough time to run after the masked individual and defuse the dynamite he chose to stay put. Luckily Batman arrived within a matter of seconds and he was able to send him after the masked man. The Commissioner turned his attention back to the dynamite and realized it only had a small charge, nothing large enough to blow up City Hall. Concerned that the real dynamite might be hidden somewhere else the Commissioner continued to section off the area and conducted a thorough search. The only thing he was able to find was a joker card which was about 10 feet away from the dynamite. A couple of minutes after finding the card Batman comes back with the masked man and puts him in the back of the Commissioner’s police car. Luckily for them the masked man told Batman he would give them everything they needed to lock up the Joker once and for all. Before Batman got the opportunity to the tell Commissioner what the accomplice told him the Commissioner showed Batman the Joker Card. Without skipping a beat Batman immediately takes off to find the Joker to question him. In the meantime the Commissioner continues to look for the bigger bomb since he knows the Joker loves to use diversions. Frustrated that he hasn’t been able to locate it the Commissioner calls Batman and tells him that they haven’t been able to locate the bomb and tells him he needs to get the information out of Joker somehow. Batman proceeds to rough up the Joker but, in typical Joker fashion, he only hints at a different plot in process, one that does not involve a bomb but something more sinister. The only thing the Joker will say is that he had an alibi – Harley Quinn – who he claims he was in a “session” with, which had been previously court ordered. Since Batman wasn’t able to get a confession out of the Joker he decided to focus on the masked man who turns out to be one of the Joker’s accomplices. Tired of always being ordered around, the accomplice tells Batman all about the Joker’s plan – the accomplice was to put the dynamite on the steps of City Hall and then go to the police department and plant another, bigger bomb, underneath the police station. Instead of taking the second bomb to the police station though the accomplice decided to call in the bomb at city hall. Worried that the Joker was watching him, which he was known to do, the accomplice decided to run when the police arrived. Had the Joker seen him talking with the police right away, the Joker would have had him killed on the spot. The Joker, who has eyes and ears everyone, quickly found out that one of his men flipped and tried to pin the bomb on him, told the Scarecrow that he had to go in to the police to try to clear his name. Their plan is to make it seem like the Riddler was the one who planted the bomb – not the Joker and that the Riddler is trying to make it seem like the Joker did it. The Scarecrow, who follows the Riddler on social media in an attempt to keep tabs on him, knows that he had posted something vague the night before that he could use to try to convince the police that the incident was all the Riddler’s doing. Both the commissioner and Batman meet with Scarecrow but neither one is convinced since the Joker’s card was found at the scene and no one except for the Joker has access to those cards. Exhibits: will be provided to each courtroom leader Photo of City Hall (Commonwealth) Dynamite (Commonwealth) Joker Card (Commonwealth) Photograph of Joker and Harley Quinn together (defense) Deck of cards (defense) Social media post from night before by the Riddler (defense) Characters to testify: Commonwealth: Defense: Batman Joker Commissioner Gordon Harley Quinn Jokers accomplice Scarecrow Character Personalities: Batman – Unofficial law enforcement for Gotham city. Tries to just help Detective Gordon in by bringing in the bad guys but sometimes isn’t able to follow the rules and ends up hurting the suspects before they can be questioned by the detective. Can also have his own self of justice. Sees the Joker as a menace to society but hasn’t been able to catch him in the act yet. Commissioner Gordon – Officer who has worked through the ranks to become the chief detective in Gotham. Is somewhat jaded by all the crime that keeps getting committed in Gotham and is starting to wonder why Gotham seems to be a magnet for career criminals like the Joker. Partially blames Batman and his vigilante ways for bringing in people like the Joker since they always want to one up Batman. Will work with Batman and use the bat signal when he needs help solving a problem but has to remind Batman every now and then that suspects can’t be roughed up when they are brought in. Also dislikes the Joker. Knows that the Joker has been part of several crime sprees throughout the city but hasn’t been able to catch him because of the Joker’s ability to distance himself from the pawns he uses to actually commit the crimes. Accomplice – flipped at the last minute. Doesn't want to be identified. Originally worked for the Riddler but when the Riddler got caught went to work for the Joker. Joker – Claims he is innocent and that the police are just after him because they haven’t been able to pin anything on him. He claims that this is really all the Riddler’s doing because the Riddler is upset he was caught by the police and the Joker wasn’t. Now that the Riddler is finally out of jail he desperately wants the Joker to get locked up so he can rule the city again. Harley Quinn – Joker’s therapist but also his girlfriend. Wants to help make him the most powerful person in Gotham so that she can also rule over the city. Claims she is a therapist but she dropped out of school before actually getting her degree. Scarecrow – Is one of the Joker’s closest advisors but only because he knows the Joker will be able to gain a lot of power in Gotham City. Is responsible for leading the Joker’s henchmen so is very worried when he finds out one of the henchmen flipped. In an effort to fix the problem he goes to the police with copies of the Riddler’s social media posts which suggest Riddler may have been involved with the bomb.
