With a very short wheel base, a top speed of 28.5 mph and being lighter than other shunters at the time, the Class 03 found itself working at places like Ipswich Docks where Class 08s were too heavy to operate there. Class 03s were also frequently used as station pilots, however they needed to have a shunters’ truck as the very short wheelbase wasn’t enough for the track circuits to register. While the Class 03s were fitted with vacuum brakes, several were fitted with dual (air and vacuum) brakes later on in their lives. These were: 03059, 03063, 03073, 03078, 03084, 03086, 03089, 03094, 03112, 03152, 03158, 03162, 03179, 03180, 03371, 03397 and 03399. 55 Class 03s have been confirmed to survive into preservation, there are currently 56 though as one is amazingly still in service with the Govia Thameslink Railway at their Hornsey Depot on the East Coast Main Line which is painted in FCC livery and is used to shunt EMUs around the depot. With a 90 horsepower increase to 1250 bhp and the introduction of charge air cooling, the 90mph-capable B variant of the engine was made and the locomotives that housed this new engine became the Class 25s. 327 Class 25s were built from 1961 until 1967 and much like the Class 24s, they could be seen all over the UK network, earning them alongside their slower siblings the nickname of ‘Rat’. They were designed for freight work however a number of locomotives were fitted with boilers so they could heat passenger trains, in particular on the Crewe to Cardiff services in the 1980s. As a matter of fact they were best known for their summer Saturday trains to Aberyswyth until 1984 when the class 25s stopped hauling these services. In March 1987, the final Class 25 was withdrawn from service and today there are 20 examples that survived the cutters torch, these can be found at various heritage railways across the UK and they vary in condition from operational to awaiting restoration. The original Class 31s were built with Mirrlees engines producing either 1,250 or 1,365hp, however these engines didn’t prove to be successful and the fleet of 31s were fitted with engines from English Electric instead, the same engines used in the Class 37 only they had to be de-rated to 1,470hp as the Class 31s electrical system couldn’t cope with any more. There were several variants of the Class 31, the first 20 to be produced were the /0s . Their main feature was the lack of a headcode box that would reside above the cab, which makes the /0s easily recognisable and earnt them the nickname of ‘Skinhead’. They were also built with non-standard multiple working equipment, that saw D5518 being converted to a standard type following a serious collision and the rest of the /0 fleet was withdrawn in the 1970s as a result. Other variants include the /1s, the first few of these shared the ‘skinhead’ design of the /0s but other than that they represented the standard of the Class 31 fleet. In addition there was the /4s which housed electric train heating compared to the steam heating in the original batches, the /5 was primarily a /4 with disabled ETH for Civil Engineers department use and finally the /6s which were wired for ETH equipment, without actually having it installed. Their distinctive engine sound has earnt the Class 37 the nickname of ‘Tractor’ as they sound very similar to the farm based vehicles’ diesel engines, they also had shared the classic English Electric ‘Deltic’ design seen on the Class 40s and 23s etc. British Rail placed an initial order of 42 locomotives in January 1959, there were no prototypes produced. The Class 37 was very much a mixed traffic locomotive, easily pulling coaches or hauling freight. These impressive machines boasted not one but two ‘Deltic’ engines - they quickly became known as the 'racing horses' of the East Coast Mainline. Apart from the graceful curving body,
