WELCOME TO TIRANA Dear professors, colleagues and friends Welcome to Tirana for the 6th International Conference of the Albanian Institute of Sociology! Albanian Institute of Sociology – that’s the offi cial name of the Albanian Sociological Association - has invited scholars from different Balkans and European countries to come together fi rst of all to debate on the theme: Education in ‘turbulent times’: The Albanian case in European and global context. That’s because we believe that the Qualitative education is a sine qua non condition for the sustainable development of our countries. On the other hand, that’s because the general transformations of our societies are affecting the sustainability and quality of education and, simultaneously, are affected by it, but also because in the past two decades major reforms have been undertaken from the education institutions all over the world and qualitative education is seen as a “universal cure” to resolve the major problems of our time and to confront future challenges. It is also recognized as a ‘cure’ for unemployment, ‘tool’ for social cohesion and ‘investment’ in children’s future. This is a good occasion to discuss together about the ‘Bologna process, ten years and after…’ Second, we have called this international conference to debate about different sociological themes in fi fteen Conference Thematic Sections, accordingly with the academic interests of the participants. One of them “Migration and labor market, Albania in European and global context” will be held as Semi Plenary Session. That’s because the international migration of Albania has been at the core of economic and social changes of Albania during last two decades; no other Center or East European Country has been affected to such extent by migration in such a short period of time and, because Albania is considered a kind of Laboratory for studying the migratory phenomenon in new Europe and global world, and specially an excellent laboratory for studying the dynamics and mutually interdependent relationship between migration and development. Third, Albanian Institute of Sociology has invited the representatives of national associations of sociologists and other social scholars of the Balkan countries to debate about ‘Sociology and social sciences in the Balkans: experiences, problems and challenges’; to establish the Balkans Forum of Social Sciences (BFSS); to establish a permanent cooperation between the existing (and forthcoming) national sociological associations in the Balkan countries, as well as between the Faculties and Departments of Social Sciences of the universities from the region; to organize an annual conference of the Balkans Forum of Social Sciences by turn in each country; to promote activities of the 6 Proceedings BFSS members in journals, newsletters, websites edited in each country. I would like to thank all our colleagues of Balkan countries and their National Associations for having strongly supported this initiative. Dear colleagues of Balkan and European countries, Our road of development of sociology is not the same. Almost up to the eve of democratic transformations, twenty years ago, no one in Albania referred to sociology as a science, no scientifi c institute was engaged in sociological research, ssociology was nowhere studied as a separate academic discipline; sociology in Albania was totally excluded from the university curricula, as well as from the focus of scientifi c research. Now sociology exists, even in Albania. Five years ago, just on 21st of November 2006, an enthusiastic group of us, founded the Albanian Institute of Sociology, and this was an important step in the development of sociology and other social sciences in Albania. With this conference every record is broken. There are 228 participants from all the universities of Albania, from all Balkans Countries and about from all over Europe. We sociologists and scholars of other social sciences have a relevant cultural, social, and personal capital, which is the possibility that will improve our society, but everything is possible if we increase our links, reciprocal knowledge, cooperation, and scientifi c exchange. Thank you very much for your presence, your papers, and your contributions! I wish a great conference Leke Sokoli Executive director of Albanian Institute of Sociology/ Head of Organizing Committee of AIS 6th International Conference 21st of November 2011 7 Në vend të hyrjes III.
