Note that, in 63 years, Renee is the first woman recipient of this trophy. Many notable names are on the Cup, note that in several years no presentation was made – a very high standard of recipient is demanded in honour of Bill Dinnison, a tireless worker for the Club over many decades. Congratulations Renee – very well deserved! And, very special, Jeff Crowe, for the very first time, Presenting, in person, the Jeff Crowe Cup to our Skipper Brad Rodden. News From Overseas After what has been described as an “Arctic Spring”, club games are now under way. And some outstanding results from players well known to us: JOSH FISHER pictured above, Josh has only just arrived in England and immediately turned out last weekend for Acton CC – the club he played so well for in 2019. Josh was meant to have returned last year but Covid prevented him. This time, with travel opening up, Acton, a 2nd division side and wanting promotion, sent him an SOS just 2 weeks ago. Met on arrival, played golf (losing a heap of balls) and, on Saturday, batting at 8 scored 30 and then took 3/29 off 7 overs. Sunday, in the Cup knockout, Josh opened the batting and hit 107. No success with the ball – 0/27 off 9 overs – but 2 wins to Acton and his Club is very happy! ALEX GRIMES and HUGH TEESDALE On Saturday, in the South Yorkshire Premier League, Alex hit 104 for Appleby Frodingham against Tickhill. For Tickhill, the leading bowler was Hugh who took 3/76 off 14 overs including Alex who he had caught. Hugh has left North Middlesex and gone north. ED BARTLETT and HARRY PRINCE are both playing for Wimborne and Colehill CC in Dorset and taking wickets. JOE KINGHORN-GRAY is 1st XI Senior Coach at Heriot CC, Edinburgh, for whom he bats 5 and opens the bowling. IAN HARPER is playing for his old club in Surrey, Maori Oxshott CC, and batting no. 4. No news of his brother, Guy, who previously turned out for Ashtead CC nor Luke Trimming who was with Dorking CC. ZAC ESSENHIGH turned 16 last month and opens the bowling for Newport CC’s 1st XI in the South Wales Premier League. Zac is in Glamorgan’s 2nd XI squad. SIMON ROBERTS here for the full season in 2010/11, is now opening the batting and top scored with 63* for Leatherhead CC’s 1st XI in the Surrey Championship – Divison 1. Having graduated from Loughborough University a couple of years back, Simon is teaching at St Paul’s School, Barnes. In Memoriam H.R.H. The Duke of Edinburgh It was sad to record the death of the Duke who was a keen cricketer – another exit at 99. He was twice President of the Marylebone Cricket Club - first in 1949 and again in 1974. In 1949 Parnell’s 3 players in the NZ Team, Merv Wallace, Bert Sutcliffe and Johnny Hayes plus Baggage Master and Scorer, Warwick Watts , met him several times – first at East Molesey CC during a “friendly” and a week later at the 2nd Test at Lord’s. where, as MCC President, he was presented to the players during the game. Note that Geoff Rabone, another member of the ‘49ers, joined Parnell in 1950 when he moved up from Wellington. There have been many tributes to the Duke including the one below from the Barmy Army: And Alan Graham, Parnell player of the 1950s/early 60s, later a noted journalist and Life Member of Karori CC, recalls “In 1974 I reported a visit of Prince Philip to the NZ soil research outfit in the Hutt Valley. A boffin told the visitor: One of our staff has fixed the soil on Athletic Park and since then the All Blacks have won every match there. Prince Philip with his usual dry humour replied: “Pity he doesn’t work on the Basin Reserve.” Four years later NZ beat England for the first time at, you guessed it, the Basin.” Iain Gallaway Iain (photo ODT files) Iain batting for IW Gallaway’s XI vs Ducks and Drakes, of Timaru, Easter 1967 (photo Editor) Iain Gallaway, the “Voice of Carisbook” died recently in his 99th year. A lawyer and wonderful cricket and rugby radio commentator, Iain gave huge joy to his multitude of listeners. I remember his earliest reports from Pakistan and India back in 1955 – he travelled with Harry Cave’s NZ Team and informed us of Bert Sutcliffe’s 230* and the deeds of JR Reid. In later years the commentary team of Gallaway, Coney, Waddell and Parker was legendary. Iain’s wife, Virginia, was a cousin of mine and, in 1967, I had the good fortune to be invited to join his team that gathered annually to play 2 or 3 games over Easter in the Maniatoto. I was able to bring a mate from Invercargill, Wayne Stephenson, and it was quite a formidable side – 4 Hadlee brothers, Barry, Martin, Dayle and 15 year old Richard, plus Keith Campbell who was performing well for Otago. We beat Patearoa (Iain and Virginia had a crib there) but lost to the Ducks and Drakes at Gimmerburn – Canterbury all rounder Murray Jack took the long handle to our pace attack and made hay. Matting on concrete, Dayle bowled rather too short, was hammered and bowled quicker, quicker and quicker – and Jack hit him further, further and further! Iain, ‘keeping was half way back to the boundary, Keith, the sole slip was, really, at Third Man, We lost and had to console ourselves after the game at the Patearoa Pub. We had more success on Easter Monday against Ranfurly on their home patch when Merv Brookes, a very talented leggie, won the day. Very sadly I had to decline further invitations to play – I was transferred to Nelson, Central Otago was too far away and any leave had to be spent in Auckland. But the memories of that Easter are still vivid – a brilliant experience even if I was the passenger in the side. Iain was most hospitable and I kept contact with him and the family intermittently over the years. And Iain was always “present” on Sports Roundup during those “lazy, hazy days of Summer” and his radio, ball by ball, commentaries are now very sadly missed.
