SUBJECTIVE RETROSPECTIVE 1988 was sort of a come back year (yet another one!) for Bob Dylan. After the disastrous mini tour with The Grateful Dead and the erratic tour in Europe with Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers, Dylan seemed to "recover" when he teamed up with George Harrison, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne and Roy Orbison, also known as The Traveling Wilburys. This resulted in three new songs and a generally delightful album. In June Dylan embarked on what turned out to be the first leg of the "The never-ending tour". This tour has no official name, but is generally referred to as "Interstate 88" after the design of the back stage passes. 2 THE YEAR AT A GLANCE Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec Hall Of Fame Induction Recording of 1st Traveling Wilbury album Release of DOWN IN THE GROOVE 40 shows Release of FOLKWAYS A VISION SHARED 25 shows 6 shows Release of TRAVELING WILBURYS VOL 1 Bridge Benefit concert Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec How Am I Doing Babe? — Bob Dylan 1988 page 3 3 CALENDAR 20 January Bob Dylan is inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Dylan attends the wedding of his oldest daughter Maria. 24 August Folkways: A Vision Shared is released. The Dylan contribution is an acoustic version of Woody Guthrie's Pretty Boy Floyd. 13-14 October Two "warm-up" shows are given in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania. The first show is the longest in 1988, 21 songs, and contains a live debut "Bob Dylan's 115 Dream". 16-19 October Four highly acclaimed shows at the Radio City Music Hall in New York. The set is almost identical, giving raise to rumours of a planned live album. Most likely just a Bobcat's pipe dream. October Release of Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1 4 December Dylan performs 6 acoustic songs with G. E. Smith at the Bridge Benefit Concert at the Oakland Coliseum.
