Eternal Flame – The Bangles – Notes Activity type: Listening for specific words, vocabulary. Grammar: Present Simple. Level: Elementary. Time: 20 minutes. Note: This was a huge hit for the Bangles in 1989, going to Number One in the UK and American charts. It was inspired by two eternal flames, one in a synagogue in Palm Springs and the second in Graceland, Memphis, to Elvis Presley. A cover version by Atomic Kitten reached Number One in the UK in 2001. 1) Give each student a copy of the worksheet. Ask them to fold the page so they cannot see the lyrics. 2) Give them time to do the first exercise. 3) Correct, then play the song and do Exercise 2. Note: It is not important for them to get this correct. Key (considering Verse 1 is repeated four times in its entirety): dreaming - 6 hand - 5 rain - 2 eyes - 5 heart - 5 sleeping - 1 flame - 6 pain - 2 sun -2 4) Ask them to unfold the worksheet to see the lyrics. Give them a few minutes to try to complete the lyrics (Exercise 3), based on their previous listening and Activity 3 above. 5) Play the song. Students correct their answers to Activity 4 above and complete the lyrics. 6) Sing together.
