The Upper Iowa Student-Athlete Advisory Committee members will be collecting signatures from fans pledging not to drive drunk. This campaign started in 12/14 Minnesota State* W OT, 92-88 2013 to commemorate Drake Bigler, the five-month-old son of Southwest Minnesota State University Men’s Basketball Coach Brad Bigler, who was killed by a drunk driver. Upper Iowa swept its competition last weekend claiming victories over Augustana University, 110-100, in overtime on Friday night and Wayne State University, 80- 1/4 @MSU Moorhead* L, 98-84 73, the following evening. The Peacocks’ 110 points marked the highest total the team has posted this season. Junior guard Joe Smoldt surpassed 1,000 career points as a Peacock with 1/10 Augustana* W OT, 110-100 a pivotal three-pointer late in the second half. After a see-saw battle for the first 33 minutes, the Peacocks trailed by seven with less than eight minutes to play. Upper Iowa chipped 1/11 Wayne State* W, 80-73 away at Augustana’s advantage for the remainder of the period, eventually tying the game at 92 when Lucas Duax drained a three-pointer with just four seconds left on the clock. UIU 1/17 Bemidji State* 7:30 p.m. dominated the extra period thanks to a 16-2 stretch. On Saturday, the Peacocks held a slim 37-35 lead heading into the break. Midway into the second half, UIU capitalized on a 22-6 1/18 Minnesota Crookston* 5:30 p.m. stretch that extended their lead to double-digits and then held on for an 80-73 victory. 1/24 @Sioux Falls* 7:30 p.m. JOE KNOWS… Joe Smoldt earned the NSIC South Division Player of the Week honors after a pair of proficient performances. In addition to leading the Peacocks with 29 points in the 1/25 @Southwest Minnesota* 5:30 p.m. overtime win on Friday, Smoldt passed 1,000 career points with Upper Iowa becoming the 1/31 St. Cloud State* 7:30 p.m. 28th Peacock to reach that milestone. Smoldt averaged 21.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game over the weekend while shooting 48% from the field. 2/1 Minnesota Duluth* 5:30 p.m. PEACOCK STANDOUTS... Jareese Williams’ 47.8% three-point field goal percentage remains 2/7 @UMary* 7:30 p.m. atop the NSIC and ranks 12th in the nation. Williams’ 14.5 points per game is a team-high and 18th best in the NSIC. Additionally, his 3.4 three-pointers per game are an NSIC second 2/8 @Minot State* 5:30 p.m. best and his 4.8 rebounds per game is second to only Joshua Carter (4.9) out of all Peacocks. Williams had 24 points, seven rebounds and made six threes last weekend. Smoldt’s 13.3 2/14 Southwest Minnesota* 7:30 p.m. points per game is the second best on the team and ranks 25th in the league. Additionally, Smoldt went 10/10 from the free throw line on Friday night which increased his free throw 2/15 Sioux Falls* 5:30 p.m. percentage to 82.7%, the eighth highest mark in the NSIC. Jake Hilmer’s 4.6 assists per game rank third in the league. His 11.2 points per game is the third highest on the team. Hilmer 2/21 @Minnesota State* 7:30 p.m. tallied 27 points, nine assists and nine rebounds versus Augustana and Wayne State. Duax leads the NSIC in steals with 2.1 per game. Duax had 23 points, 10 assists, eight rebounds 2/22 @Concordia-St. Paul* 5:30 p.m. and four steals over the weekend. 2/26 NSIC Tournament Quarterfinals TBA SCOUTING THE BEAVERS… The Peacocks are 8-11 all-time against the Beavers. Bemidji State *Northern Sun Conference Game is 8-6 this season and 5-5 in conference play. The Beavers are coming off of back-to-back losses to NSIC foes by slim margins. Bemidji State first fell to Minnesota State University Moorhead, 78-75, before being defeated by Northern State University, 98-92. Upper Iowa holds a 15-5 record versus Minnesota Crookston including a nine-game win streak that ran from 2011 until 2017.
