This day. Every day. Catholic Charities. 2019 ANNUAL REPORT Every day. ? How can we help At more than 280 locations and service sites across Cook and Lake counties, our first question is, “How can we help?” From food and clothing to housing, job training, and counseling, Catholic Charities meets people where they are and works with them to create new opportunities, new behaviors, and new futures. Whatever the need — a helping hand or longer term care and support — we are proud to bring our experience and expertise to bear in improving the lives of hundreds of thousands of people each year. LETTER FROM THE ARCHBISHOP Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, The love of God and love of neighbor have driven the mission and history of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago for the past 102 years. Through our parishes, religious orders, volunteers, donors, and board members we have brought the Church’s social mission to life. Loving the poor, a mark of the Church from its earliest days, involves enabling all persons to become active participants in the life of society, sharing in and contributing to the common good (Catechism of the Catholic Church). We do this each day through programs and services, which meet the basic human needs of food, clothing and shelter, but also offer professional support to help people reach their full potential and share the fruits of their labors. CARDINAL The enclosed 2019 Annual Report provides us an opportunity to stand in the shoes of the hundreds of thousands of people whose lives have been BLASE J. CUPICH transformed by Catholic Charities. With your support, and the involvement Archbishop of Chicago of its Board of Directors/ Board of Advisors, Junior Board members, thousands of volunteers and committee members. Catholic Charities is able to reveal God’s constant love and mercy, bringing to so many the promise of new life and new hope. My thanks go to all of them, and to our parishes, schools, and October 21, 2019 institutions, as well as the many government, professional, and social service organizations with whom we collaborate each year. As the report reveals, we do not do this great work on our own. Finally, a special word of thanks to Monsignor Michael Boland for his dedication and care of the poor, the vulnerable and the marginalized. We will miss him, but we know that his example of profound respect for all God’s children will serve as a guide and inspiration well into the future. We know the Lord will bring exciting new opportunities to Catholic Charities, just as He will bring Monsignor Boland’s talents to prevail in important new endeavors. Thank you all for working with Catholic Charities to love and care for the poor. May the charity of Christ continue to encourage and impel us to greater love and service of God and our neighbors. Sincerely, Cardinal Blase J. Cupich 4 CATHOLIC CHARITIES OF THE ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO LETTER FROM MONSIGNOR BOLAND Dear Friends of Catholic Charities, With each sunrise, the Good Lord pierces our soul with His brilliant light, bringing hope and the chance for new beginnings. Perhaps that is why the magnificence of a sunrise touches us so deeply, because it is at once inspiring, renewing, and hopeful. With each new day, and because of your generosity, Catholic Charities has the very great privilege to bring hope and light to thousands of people, by providing the most professional and comprehensive help possible, ensuring that people can address the obstacles in their lives and approach their days with more confidence and hope. Each day also brings a fresh start for Catholic Charities’ operations. We are continually taking the pulse of community needs, assessing our program offerings, enhancing collaborations with community and service partners, and ensuring REV. MONSIGNOR that we are delivering services in the best, most efficient way possible. This year MICHAEL M. BOLAND we relied on our volunteers, donors, board members, parishes, and community partners to help us expand our senior services through a partnership with the Chicago Housing Authority, better serve western Lake County by breaking ground on new offices in Round Lake, bring the dignity of a hot shower to hundreds of Chicagoans through our Pope Francis Ministries, grow our community mental health and addiction services, and so much more. Every day we are inspired by the courage and success of our clients, and are motivated by the incredible ways that October 21, 2019 you, the lifeblood of Catholic Charities, continue to help people you’ve never met. Catholic Charities works diligently to balance three operational imperatives: addressing unmet and growing needs in our region; hiring the highest caliber professionals to deliver services; and being fiscally responsible with our budget. This past year has had its challenges with unrealized rate increases for essential services such as adult day care and in-home services for the elderly. It has put a strain on the budget, but one I am confident can be expediently addressed. This coming year will also be a time of new beginnings for me, as I have made the difficult decision to step down from the position of Administrator, President and CEO of Catholic Charities. I am so proud of everything we have accomplished together during my 30 years with the agency. Because Catholic Charities puts mission front and center and involves so many in achieving that mission, it will always be more than the sum of its parts. All of you have helped make Catholic Charities what it is today — an essential part of a healthy and vibrant Chicago area and a healthy and vibrant church. I leave an organization well-poised to continue its critical role addressing the needs of all those it is our privilege and responsibility to help. I am excited for this remarkable organization’s next chapter — a chapter whose authors include donors, volunteers, partners, schools, and the larger community of Chicago and the Catholic Church — and what that means for improving hundreds of thousands of lives. As we are reminded with each glorious sunrise, God is always doing something Monsignor Michael Boland stepped new. He does this in us and through us. This day and every day. down from his position as Administrator, President, and CEO of Catholic Charities effective August 16. Sincerely, Kathy Donahue, Senior Vice President of Program Development and Evaluation, has been named Acting Administrator, President, and CEO by Cardinal Cupich Rev. Monsignor Michael M. Boland and the Board of Advisors. 2019 ANNUAL REPORT 5 LETTER FROM THE CHAIR Dear Friends of Catholic Charities, “What a difference a day makes” the old song goes, “and the difference is you.” I find that lyric beautifully encompasses the Catholic Charities community. More than any building, program, person, or even faith, Catholic Charities is all of us doing our part each day to help those in need and to bring the Kingdom of God a little closer to one another. Donors, volunteers, staff, and clients; parishes, schools, and professional groups; friends, colleagues, and strangers come together in extraordinary and impactful ways here. On pages 10 and 11, you’ll see a glimpse of the myriad services Catholic Charities provides over a 24-hour period. Those services, delivered with professionalism and respect, and rooted in Jesus’ simplest and perhaps most powerful instruction to “love one another as I have loved you,” are only possible because of this community, and your generosity. As Chair of the Board of Directors, it is my honor and pleasure to serve an organization of such import to the well-being of this region and its residents. To do so in the company of the dedicated stewards on the Board of Directors and the many donors and volunteers highlighted in the following pages is humbling to say the least. I am also humbled by the opportunity Catholic Charities gives all of us to be part of so many other peoples’ successes, often in the face of incredibly trying circumstances. People make new starts at Catholic Charities in large ways and small, and while they are the heroes of their stories, we get to play a part, and that is deeply gratifying. Thank you for the confidence and generosity you continue to show with your support of Catholic Charities. Today and every day. Sincerely, Janice Klich, M.D. Chairperson, Board of Directors BOARD OF DIRECTORS Catholic Charities benefits from the support of three distinct but complementary boards: the Board of Directors, the Board of Advisors, and the Junior Board. These boards advise and support Catholic Charities and its administration to fulfill our mission of serving the poor and advancing the organization’s core values: Respect, Compassion, Competence, and Stewardship.
