...................................................................................................................................................... 79 4 PREFACE he Itinerary now issued as a Supplement to The Lyon in Mourning (Volumes one, two, and three) originated in an attempt to compile a simple diary of the movements of Prince Charles Edward as they Tare recorded in the collections of Bishop Forbes. It was indeed intended to be no more than a chronological index which should form part of the third volume of that work. Analysis of the contents of The Lyon however, soon revealed the existence of gaps in the narratives which needed to be filled up, and discrepancies, real or apparent, which required correction or explanation. This necessitated an examination and comparison of all the original sources available, and, in consequence, a considerable enlargement of the scope of the Itinerary, with the view of obtaining a complete daily record of the Expedition. The material thus collected has so far exceeded in bulk the work originally contemplated that the Council of the Scottish History Society has thought it convenient to issue this Supplement as a separate volume. The Itinerary is not intended to be a history; but while the daily record is necessarily brief, the statements in the text have been so far expanded as to render them intelligible to the reader without the need of constant recurrence to their sources except for verification
