Royal Darwin Hospital (RDH) is a 345-bed tertiary Hospital which is designated as the National Critical Care and Trauma Response Centre and a teaching Hospital affiliated with Flinders University. The catchment area is vast, and includes urban communities, regional hospitals and remote Aboriginal communities. The hospital services a population of at least 140,000 with patients also being transferred from Northern Western Australia and Timor. Territory hospitals provide a range of services often not seen in similarly sized hospitals due to the wide range of medical conditions, cross-cultural blend of patients and combination of rural and remote localities. Royal Darwin Hospital has a modern, fully equipped 9 bed coronary care unit which also has facilities for non-invasive respiratory support. Diagnostic services include: Exercise Stress Testing, Holter Monitoring, Transthoracic and Trans- oesophageal Echocardiography, Stress Echocardiogram and Diagnostic Coronary Angiogram. Devices such as Loop Recorders, Permanent Pacemakers and Defibrillators are implanted at RDH. Nuclear Cardiac Perfusion imaging services are also available on-site. We have recently commenced Electrophysiology Studies at our centre. The Cardiology Department at RDH is a vibrant and growing department. There is a high percentage of cardiovascular and rheumatic heart disease in the young and diverse population which contributes to a varied, interesting and satisfying work environment. The workforce currently includes 5 Cardiologists, 4 Registrars (2 Advanced Trainees and 2 Basic Physician Trainees) and 3 Resident Medical Officers supported by 4 dedicated Senior Cardiac Nurse Co-ordinators. These positions provide the opportunity to join NT Cardiac Pty Ltd, a well-established private cardiology practice conveniently located next door to RDH at the 100-bed Darwin Private Hospital (DPH). NT Cardiac is contracted to the NT Government to provide cardiac diagnostic services including Echocardiography, Diagnostic Coronary Angiography / Angioplasty and Electrophysiology Services to public patients in the Northern Territory. This combined Public and Private Practice arrangement has been considered unique and has provided a high standard of care for both the public and private sectors. NT Cardiac has established a Cardiac Angiography Lab and a “Chest Pain Assessment Clinic” which has a full range of non-invasive cardiac investigations including a dedicated Toshiba Aquillion ONE (320 Slice) for CT Coronary Angiograms. Successful candidates would be expected to participate in a regular on call roster and ward rounds, student and junior doctor education, clinics at regional hospitals (Alice Springs, Katherine, Gove and Tennant Creek) and Outreach Cardiology clinics at remote Aboriginal communities. Through the affiliation with Flinders University, the Cardiology Department has developed a close working relationship with the Cardiology services at Flinders Medical Centre, South Australia. This has also resulted in the provision of revascularisation services, weekly cardiothoracic teleconferences, visiting services, back filling of staff, and an Advanced Trainee Cardiology Registrar. Cardiothoracic Surgery will be commencing in 2019 which will allow further expansion of interventional services. Collaborative research opportunities are also available through Menzies School of Health Research (in the Top End) and Baker IDI Health & Diabetes Institute (in Central Australia). The Northern Territory offers a great lifestyle, spectacular geography and unique exposure to medical opportunities not available elsewhere in Australia.
