In putting Jesus on the spot, the Sadducees were unexpectedly rewarded with a firm declaration of the truth of the Resurrection. By proclaiming God to be the God of the living, Jesus strengthens the reso lve of all who place their trust in him and who hope in a share in the eternal life of God. LITURGY OF THE WORD: Our first reading from Maccabees recalls the bravery of seven brothers and their mother who preferred death to denying their hope in the God of Israel. Saint Paul reminds the Thessalonians of God’s fidelity and encourages them to find hope and strength in the Lord. In the Gospel, the Sadducees attempt to put Jesus on the spot on the topic of resurrection.
