As I write this, July is almost over and I have just 1 Fred Hymans returned from spending a day with our Trollfjell campers teaching lefse making. Five classes met that day and each 3 Jacqueline Mehus camper rolled two or three lefse rounds. Each then slathered 4 Coy Bratton their rounds with butter and a thick coating of sugar and 5 Ona Saras cinnamon. Just to see their faces of happiness when they bit 6 Bente Ellis into their lefse makes our camperships worthwhile! 7 Paul Petersen When I left camp, I was serenaded in Norwegian by the Heritage Class, 8 Linda Smestad taught by Beth Baird . Beth is the current president of Edvard Grieg Lodge #74 in Southern California, and her late mother, Tordis , was one of my very 8 Rhonda Ansok best friends. I have known Beth since she was a baby and it was a special 8 Joshua Dybdahl treat for both of us to reminisce about her mother. 12 Bodil Grodum The “dog days” of summer are upon us; I remember in my childhood that 18 Kristen Hunsbedt those days were miserable and hot. If you were lucky to be near a river or 18 Hali Hansen creek, you could cool off in the water. However, we lived on the prairie with 20 Paul Nore no stream in sight. Then, in 1931, when I was 10 years old, a man-made lake 20 Joan Kyle was built nearby with boating and a playground with swings. Every Sunday, Dad drove us to the lake so we could splash in the water. But we had no 21 Genevieve Deppong bathing suits so only our feet got wet. 25 Patricia Nyberg In 1932, a big box arrived at our house from my Uncle Ole in Fargo. We 29 Norman Johnson opened the box and it was full of clothes; among the garments were three 30 Johan Lund very finely-knit turtleneck sweaters. Well, we didn’t wear turtlenecks… but in 30 June Stennes the 1930s, bathing suits were knitted… so, I asked my mother if I could make bathing suits out of the sweaters. She replied, “If you think you can do it, yes, Heritage Members you can have them.” 11 Lotty Del Barga So I got busy… cut off the sleeves, reamed out the neckline, sewed up the 14 Johan Roed bottom to make a crotch… and my twin sisters and I had a bathing suit each. 19 Jonathon Bennett One was pink, one was blue, and the other was black with a white stripe. 19 Matthew Bennett When we went to the lake wearing our new swimming suits, we looked just 30 Kathleen Howard as good as anybody there. We had so much fun! Gratulerer med dagen! The Solveig Club will not meet in August; our next meeting will be on Wednesday, September 16. Enjoy your dog days of summer and drive carefully. Ha det bra, Elderid Everly, Solveig Club President Membership Update Still no new members – we are however, losing a couple of members. • Larry C.
