A N D R È S C H U E N - Baritone Born in 1984 in South Tyrol (Italy), André Schuen studied cello for many years, then he decided to study singing and in 2010 he graduated with distinction from the Mozarteum of Salzburg, where he studied with Horiana Branisteanu and with Wolfgang Holzmair (Lied and oratorio). He also attended masterclasses held by Kurt Widmer, Sir Thomas Allen, Kammersängerin Brigitte Fassbaender, Romualdo Savastano and Olaf Bär. Andrè Schuen has performed in Salzburg since 2010, first as a member of the Young Singers Project and subsequently in various productions at the Salzburg Festival conducted by Simon Rattle and Riccardo Muti. From 2010 to 2014 he was a member of the ensemble at the Opera House in Graz. Andrè Schuen was one of the few singers to appear in three roles at the same time – as Figaro, Don Giovanni and Guglielmo – in Nikolaus Harnoncourt’s Da Ponte cycle at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna. His performances led to him winning the Austrian Music & Theatre Prize. Andrè Schuen continues to have a close association with the Theater an der Wien, where he has performed with great acclaim by public and critics the title role in Giovanni Paisiello’s Il barbiere di Siviglia under the baton of René Jacobs or again in the title role in the world premiere of Anno Schreier’s Hamlet directed by Christoph Loy. Other highlights of his career include the role debuts Marcello in La bohème in Geneva and as Conte di Almaviva in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro in Angers and Nantes, Don Giovanni at the Opéra National de Lorraine in Nancy and the Grand Théâtre de Luxembourg. As a concert performer, André Schuen has sung several masses and cantatas such as Bach’s Weihnachtsoratorium, Johannes-Passion and Si minor Mass, in Haydn’s Die Schöpfung, Händel’s Messiah, Mozart’s Requiem, Brahms’s Ein deutsches Requiem and Mendelssohn’s Die erste Walpurgisnacht. Andrè Schuen’s Lied repertoire includes Schubert’s Winterreise, Schumann’s Dichterliebe op. 48 and Liederkreis op. 24, Wolf´s Michelangelo-Lieder. In summer 2009, he performed the world premiere of Bald ist mir nimmer kalt (12 Lieder on poems of Norbert Conrad Kaser for voice and percussion) by Herbert Grassl. In 2017 Andrè Schuen celebrated his North American debut at the renowned Tanglewood Festival, as well as at the Aspen Music Festival in a Schubert recital together with Andreas Haefliger. Andrè Schuen’s latest lied CD “Wanderer“ accompanied by pianist Daniel Heide is dedicated to Robert Schumann. His first recital disc with songs by Schumann, Wolf and Martin was highly acclaimed by the press and the public. In 2012 he also took part in the recording of Carmen with the Berliner Philharmoniker conducted by Simon Rattle.
