Calvert Hall College High School Theatre Spring 2018 Overview Disney’s Beauty and the Beast Two Acts 12 Named Roles Unlimited Ensemble Roles Description: Step into the enchanted world of Broadway's modern classic, DISNEY'S Beauty and the Beast, an international sensation that has played to over 35 million people worldwide in 13 countries. Based on the Academy Award- winning animated feature, the stage version includes all of the wonderful songs written by Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman, along with new songs by Mr. Menken and Tim Rice. The original Broadway production ran for over thirteen years and was nominated for nine Tony Awards, including “Best Musical”. The classic story tells of Belle, a young woman in a provincial town, and the Beast, who is really a young prince trapped under the spell of an enchantress. If the Beast can learn to love and be loved, the curse will end and he will be transformed into his former self. However, time is running out. If the Beast does not learn his lesson soon, he and his household will be doomed for all eternity. This "tale as old as time" is filled with spectacular costume and set opportunities. DISNEY'S Beauty and the Beast offers a great opportunity to bring your entire community together for family theatre at its best. Pre-Audition Meeting: January 3rd, 3:30-4:30PM Auditions: January 8th – January 9th, 3:30-7PM Callbacks: January 10th, 3:30-6PM Show Dates: April 13-15th, April 20-22nd Special Events: Middle School Day Performance – Friday, April 13th 9:30AM-11:30AM High Noon Tea with Mrs. Potts, Chip and Belle – Sunday, April 15th 12-1 PM Story Time with Belle and Friends – Saturday, April 21st 5-6 PM Audition Process: Actors will be able to sign up for an audition spot starting mid-December at Calverthall.com/theatre. Select a slot that works best for you and your schedule. Complete an Audition Information Sheet (pgs.2-3) and identify what character(s) you will audition for by reading the character description breakdown (pg.4). Auditions will consist of a three-part process. 1. Acting Portion – You will be asked to read from a small portion of the script from the show. Copies of these scripts will be available at the pre-audition meeting and the audition. 2. Dance Portion – You will be asked to perform a small dance segment in a small group setting. You will be able to learn this dance segment via a video download and the pre-audition meeting in January. 3. Vocal Portion – You will be asked to sing a small portion of a song from the musical. It is expected that all students, from Calvert Hall or females from outside schools, will treat each person in this program with respect. Actors must attend every scheduled session where they are expected. Not every actor will be called for every practice. Actors are expected to know their schedule, arrive at least five minutes before scheduled start time, and be available for the duration of the scheduled time. Rehearsals are scheduled to take place during the weeks before and after Easter. All conflicts that keep actors from making their scheduled time must be cleared and approved through the Director prior to the start of the scheduled rehearsal period. Two (2) unexcused absences may result in losing your assigned role or being asked to drop the show. Please review sample calendar while identifying conflicts. If casted as a lead, male or female, those actors must be available for not only the rehearsals and shows but for the Special Events listed above. Actors who report conflicts with those dates may not be considered for lead roles. All actors are expected to stay for strike after the close of both shows on Sunday. There will be a mini-strike after the first Sunday performance. There will be a full strike on Sunday, April 22nd. All actors should be prepared to attend and should bring clothes to work in. Belle A vibrant, intelligent young beauty who wants much more in life than living in a F5-E3 small town. She is perceived to be quite odd. Maurice Belle's loving, eccentric inventor father. Db4-Bb2 Gaston The story's antagonist. The vain, egotistical, narcissistic, ultra-masculine villain E4-A2 determined to marry Belle. Le Fou Gaston's bumbling sidekick. F#4-B2 Lumière A suave, French, debonair enchanted candelabra. The maître d' of the castle. F#4-F#2 Cogsworth A tightly wound, enchanted stuffy mantle clock and head of the Beast's castle.
