Hammond, Conductor iii BRUCE ROBERT POULTON Chancellor, NCSU Chancellor Bruce RobertPoulton, the tenth chief executive officer of North Carolina State Univer- sity, received his Bachelor of Sciencefrom Rutgers University, graduating with honors. His Master of Sciencein Nutrition andhisDoctorofPhilosophyin Endocrinology also came from Rutgers, and he holds a Doctor of Laws degree from the University of New Hampshire. HehasbeenafacultymemberatRutgersUniver- sity, the University of Maine, Michigan State Uni- versity, and the University ofNew Hampshire, and he is currently a professor of animal science at North Carolina State University. Prior to coming to North Carolina, Dr. Poulton served as Dean of Life Sciences and then as Vice Presidentofthe University ofMaine before becom- ing the first chancellor of the consolidated New Hampshire University System which has four campuses and a statewide School of Lifelong Learning. Priortothatheservedin anumberoftopadministrativepostsatthe Universityof Maine and also as executive administrator to Governor James Longley of Maine. As chancellor of North Carolina State University, Dr. Poulton is chief academic officer and principal administrator and as such oversees educational, research and extension programswhichextendfromthecentral campustoresearchunits, contin- uingeducation sites and extension offices acrossthe state. The University’s fieldsof endeavor are broad-ranging, encompassing the fields of agriculture, engineering, textilesandapparel, environmentalandphysical sciences, mathematics,thehuman- ities and social sciences, forestresources, veterinary medicine and natural sciences. Chancellor Poulton is responsible for administering an approximate annual budgetof$365million composedofstateallocatedfunds, federal allocatedfundsand grants, research grants and private gifts and endorsements. The Chancellor is responsiblefordevelopingsupportanduniversityresources,workingwiththepres- identofTheUniversityofNorthCarolina,througheffectivecommunicationwiththe North Carolina General Assembly and Governor, and through positive interaction with foundations, federal agencies and private supporters.
