DSDS: the Journey So Far

Themes through the years DSDS 2007: Meeting the MDGs: exploring the natural resource dimensions DSDS 2006: Linking across MDGs: towards innovative partnerships and governance DSDS 2005: Beyond universal goals: steering development towards global sustainability DSDS 2004: Partnerships for sustainable development: addressing the WEHAB agenda DSDS 2003: Beyond Johannesburg: translating resolve into action for a sustainable future DSDS 2002: Ensuring sustainable livelihoods: challenges for governments, corporates, and the civil society DSDS 2001: Poverty- the global challenge for governments, industry, scientists, and the civil society The DSDS series has enjoyed global support, from over 60 countries, attracting participation from heads of government and ministers, and a host of other dignitaries comprising Nobel laureates, development practitioners, scientists, academics, and corporate leaders. The Sustainable Development Leadership Award The SDLA (Sustainable Development Leadership Award), instituted by TERI in 2005, is presented yearly in recognition of significant contribution towards the cause of sustainable development. CEO Forum 2008 Sustainable Development and Climate Change: the business outlook 6 February 2008, Hotel Oberoi, New Delhi Recognizing the increasingly important role played by the business sector in transforming the world economy and its stakes in global development, TERI–BCSD (Business Council for Sustainable Development) India, in partnership with the WBCSD (World Business Council for Sustainable Development), Geneva, introduced the CEO Forum as a curtain raiser to the DSDS (Delhi Sustainable Development Summit) in 2004. Since then, the CEO Forum has become one of the foremost global CEO meets to discuss the challenges facing companies in the context of sustainable development. The CEO Forum 2008 will seek to deliberate on issues, challenges, and opportunities related to industry in the context of climate change. It will bring better understanding of the challenges faced by different sectors of industry; their level of preparedness; and the opportunities, barriers, and scope for partnership among industry, research, and international organizations. The discussions would focus on specific themes like business challenges of climate change; adaptation of businesses and mitigating opportunities; and drivers for change. The CEOs would be seated at separate roundtables. Each roundtable, facilitated by a chair, will hold specific discussions. Subsequently, the chairs will present the findings of their respective tables. Open discussions will be held and the concluding session will arrive at action-orientated solutions. International Climate Change Exhibition 2008 TERI is hosting its first ever ICCE (International Climate Change Exhibition) to compliment the theme of DSDS 2008: Sustainable Development and Climate Change. The ICCE focuses on the challenges, impacts, and existing initiatives for tackling the issues of climate change. The objective is that by allowing participants to showcase their climate change developmental projects to an international market, a momentum will be added to the solution finding process by raising public awareness to the potential offered by climate change. This platform will offer the exhibitors unmatched branding by signifying their commitment for the environment. Exhibition layout The Energy and Resources Institute The research activities of T E R I (The Energy and Resources Institute) on climate change began as early as 1988. The institute conducts research and outlines policy initiatives for addressing global environmental challenges. The thrust areas of TERI’s climate change activities include policy analysis and contribution to international climate change debate; climate change mitigation and CDM (clean development mechanism); impacts and vulnerability assessment and adaptation strategies; GHG (greenhouse gas) inventories; and climate modelling. TERI gives a lot of emphasis on capacity building and outreach of different stakeholder groups: the Government of India officials, industry representatives, civil society organizations, and student groups. Various means to disseminate information and spread awareness on climate change include organizing workshops, seminars, training programmes and dialogues, publishing through print and electronic media, and documentary films. The Royal Norwegian Embassy Norway has set itself ambitious climate targets that imply reduction of greenhouse gas emissions both home and abroad. The stall introduces the visitor to Norwegian climate policy and provides information on some of its key components, including CDM and the government’s carbon scheme for purchase of emission reductions, efforts to promote research and development of renewable energy and immature energy technologies, and the programme for carbon capture and storage. Visitors will receive information about the Embassy’s programme for promoting cooperation and partnerships with India, both at the government level, between institutions and in the business sector. Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation The SDC (Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation) has been working for over 40 years on rural development and on issues of environmental and sustainable development. SDC works principally through government and promising civil society partners. The SDC stand at DSDS will put partners’ work in the foreground and representatives of some organisations (DA, IDEI, Intercooperation, MSSRF, and WOTR) will be present to answer participants’ queries. SDC is proud of its more than a decade long involvement with TERI and to be a senior partner of DSDS 2008. Agence Française de Développement The stall of the AFD (Agence Française de Développement) will present the projects the AFD has carried out in order to mitigate climate change, as well as the publications it has produced in that field and beyond. It will address issues related to energy efficiency, renewable energies, conservation efforts, sectoral solutions, and financial instruments. The ADEME, which is the French Environment and Energy Management Agency, will also be represented. Department for International Development The DFID (Department for International Development) stall showcases some of the work supported by the British government on climate change in India. Here you can find copies of the following. ! ‘Transforming Rural Livelihoods in India’, describing results and impacts of DFID’s programmes with state governments ! VROM The rise of the average temperature of earth’s atmosphere disturbs several crucial global balances (people, planet, profit). Moreover, it aggregates environmental degradation and accelerates resources scarcity. The moment to urgent response is here. How to do that in a way that all changes are again in the direction towards new balances? Out of the fourteen trends/issues eight were identified with priority for policy development providing the ministry's top officials a framework to embed short-term policy decisions in a long-term orientation.
