2019 D-E Distinguished Alumni Award Honorees 1) Peter Balakian ESB ’69 Peter Balakian is the author of seven books of poems most recently Ozone Journal, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, as well as Ziggurat (2010) and June-tree: New and Selected Poems, 1974-2000 (2001). His four books of prose include The Burning Tigris: The Armenian Genocide and America’s Response (2004), won the 2005 Raphael Lemkin Prize and was a New York Times Notable Book and a New York Times Best Seller. His memoir, Black Dog of Fate won the 1998 PEN/Martha Albrand Prize for the Art of the Memoir and was a best book of the year for the New York Times, the LA Times, and Publisher’s Weekly, and was recently issued in a 10th anniversary edition. He is co- translator of Girgoris Balakian’s Armenian Golgotha: A Memoir of the Armenian Genocide 1915- 1918, (Knopf, 2009), which was a Washington Post book of the year. He is also the author of a book on the American poet Theodore Roethke and the co translator of the Armenian poet Siamanto’s Bloody News From My Friend. Between 1976-1996 he edited with Bruce Smith the poetry journal Graham House Review. His prose and essays have appeared in the New York Times Magazine, The Chronicle of Higher Education, Salon, The Daily Beast, Tikkun, The Guardian, LA Times, Art In America, and others. He is the recipient of many awards and prizes including the Presidential Medal and the Moves Khoranatsi Medal from the Republic of Armenia, The Spendlove Prize for Social Justice, Tolerance, and Diplomacy (recipients include President Carter), a Guggenheim Fellowship, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, the Emily Clark Balch Prize for poetry from the Virginia Quarterly Review. He has appeared widely on national television and radio (60 Minutes, ABC World News Tonight, PBS, Charlie Rose, Fresh Air, etc) , and his work have appeared in a many languages including Armenian, Bulgarian, French, Dutch, Greek, German, Hebrew, Russian, and Turkish. He is Donald M. and Constance H. Rebar Professor of the Humanities, Professor of English and Director of Creative Writing at Colgate University. 2) Anthony Bourdain ESB ’74 * (Posthumously honored) Attended Vassar College and is a graduate of The Culinary Institute of America Tony Bourdain is a 1978 graduate of the Culinary Institute of America and a veteran of numerous professional kitchens, including many years as executive chef at Brasserie Les Halles. He has been noted as one of the most influential chefs in the world. He first became known for his 2000 book Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly. His first food and world-travel television show was A Cook's Tour, which ran for 35 episodes on the Food Network from 2002 through 2003. In 2005 he began hosting the Travel Channel's culinary and cultural adventure programs Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations (2005–2012) and The Layover (2011–2013). In 2013, Tony switched to CNN to host Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown. 3) Jennifer Borg ’83 J.D., Columbia University School of Law Editor, Columbia’s Human Rights Law Review Judge and editor, Moot Court B.A., Denison University Jennifer Borg is currently a lawyer with the Pashman, Stein, Walder and Hayden Law firm in New Jersey. She is the former General Counsel and Vice President of North Jersey Media Group Inc. The Company published more than 50 magazines and newspapers – including the award-winning daily newspaper, The Record – as well as the news website, NorthJersey.com. The Record was owned by the Borg family for over 80 years and was recently sold to Gannett Satellite Information Network LLC. As head of the Legal Department, Jennifer handled all First Amendment issues and right-of-access claims, as well as all the company’s litigation and transactional matters. She is a fierce advocate of open and transparent government. In 2014, she successfully litigated many cases under New Jersey’s Open Public Records Act helping The Record in its award-winning breaking news coverage of “Bridgegate.” Ms. Borg has been involved in major copyright issues, such as the licensing of the iconic photograph taken by Thomas E. Franklin of The Record (Bergen Co., New Jersey) showing three firefighters raising an American flag at Ground Zero. Jennifer Borg is also President of the Foundation of Northern New Jersey f/k/a North Jersey Media Group Foundation which she founded in 2002 to assist those who suffered losses because of the events of September 11, 2001. She is a former trustee of D-E and is a legacy family alumna. 2019 D-E Athletic Hall of Fame Inductees The Athletic Hall of Fame will be held during the D-E reunion 2019 weekend at approximately 5:15 PM on Saturday, June 1, 2019 in Hajjar Auditorium. All current and former faculty and staff are encouraged to join us after the ceremonies for the annual D-E Alumni-Faculty reception under the tent on Leggett Field. 1) Jeff Overton’69 Jeff will be posthumously honored. Jeff Overton was one of the best wrestlers of the Carlos Henriquez era (1963- 1974). His overall record for four years in the regular season and state tournaments was 34-2-1. His record from 10th-12th grade was 26- 0-0. He won two state championships and in his senior year he placed 4th in a natonal prep school tournament held at Lehigh University. 2) Jain Lattes ’94 Jain was a gymnast, indoor and outdoor track participant. She was captain for all three seasons her senior year. She was the North Jersey track and field champion in the High Jump in 1992. She was All Bergen County and is listed as Bergen County's all-time track performers for the triple jump. She participated in 7 seasons of track and field at Bowdoin College. She placed 3rd in the NESCAC Pentathlon. She is an All American for Master’s track and field for the shot put, high jump and triple jump. .
