PAGE ONE Roald Dahl was born in Llandaff, South Wales, on September 13, 1916. Dahl’s parents were Norwegian. As a child, he spent his summer vacations visiting with his grandparents in Oslo. Roald Dahl was one of five children and he had a half brother and half sister so it must’ve been a busy house to grow up in, his parents were called Sofie and Harald. Roald Dahl was named after the famous Norwegian polar explorer Roald Amundsen, who, 5 years before Dahl’s birth, led the first expedition to reach the South Pole (on 14 December 1911). When Roald was at Llandaff Cathedral School, he and four friends got into a lot of trouble for terrorising the local sweet shop owner Mrs Morgan. They put a dead mouse into a jar of gobstoppers and got caught. This ended with the boys being caned at School and Roald’s mother took him out of the School. This story is known as The Great Mouse Plot. Sweets and chocolate feature a lot in Roald Dahl’s stories (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Witches) Roald Dahl was fascinated by medicine and designed the Wde- Dahl-Till-Valve with neurosurgeon Kenneth Till which was used for brain surgery. He also led vaccination awareness campaigns and he discovered new ways of helping people recover after they had had a stroke. Roald Dahl thought Doctors were pretty important. Roald Dahl had many exciting jobs as well as writing stories he was also a fighter pilot, a spy and a chocolate taster. Which job would you enjoy the most? Roald Dahl invented hundreds of new words in his stories. You can find them in the Roald Dahl Dictionary, featuring almost 8,000 real and imaginary words used by the author in his many books.
