PRESS RELEASE | Torino, 1 February 2021 Artissima STASI FRENETICA From 3 to 12 February 2021, Artissima finally opens to the public the three exhibitions of Stasi Frenetica (Frenetic Standstill) at GAM, Palazzo Madama and MAO, the museums of Fondazione Torino Musei. Ready from 5 November 2020, the shows have never been able to be visited live up to now, but they have received great interest from the public and professionals thanks to its virtual and online tours. Artissima International Fair of Contemporary Art announces the opening of Stasi Frenetica (Frenetic Standstill) each Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 3 to 12 February 2021, in the museums of Fondazione Torino Musei – GAM - Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, Palazzo Madama - Museo Civico d’Arte Antica and MAO Museo d’Arte Orientale. The exhibitions are open on Wednesday and Thursday from 11am to 7pm and on Friday from 11am to 8pm. Parallel to Stasi Frenetica, at GAM the public will be able to visit the two exhibition projects FOLLE (Crowds) – presenting a selecion of historic photograhs from the Archivio Publifoto Intesa Sanpaolo picturing diverse moments of social proximity and gatherings from the 1930s to the 1990s, and JaguArt – the group show of the 10 finalists of the Italian Talent Road Show across Italy in search of young talents, based on the dialogue between Artissima and Jaguar Land Rover Italia. The access to the shows is regulated ensuring full safety for visitors and staff, with limited admissions and routes that allow for adequate distancing, in compliance with all ministerial guidelines. The Fondazione Torino Musei also ensures the regular and periodic cleaning and sanitation of museum environments. STASI FRENETICA Titled Stasi Frenetica, the exhibitions at GAM, Palazzo Madama and MAO feature works provided by the galleries selected for this edition of Artissima, presenting an overview of highlights of what the audience would have seen in the booths of the fair. A choral approach to the theme frenetic standstill, curated by Ilaria Bonacossa in close dialogue with the gallerists involved. A synergic effort, undertaken with and for the galleries of Artissima, offering both a cultural project and at the same time an opportunity for visibility and promotion for the most important participants of the event. GAM, Palazzo Madama and MAO therefore play host to the historic sections of Artissima respectively: the Main Section, presenting a selection of the most representative galleries on the international scene; the New Entries section dedicated to emerging international galleries; Dialogue/Monologue in which galleries with an experimental approach present a single artist or a dialogue between two artists. GAM - Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea The modernist GAM building, on the ground floor and in the basement, host an installation of surprising visual polyphony with over 100 works from the galleries of the Main Section and the Dialogue/Monologue section of Artissima, selected by Ilaria Bonacossa. The works from the Main Section are monumental pieces by great artists who are true pioneers, combined with irreverent experiments by international talents: small, unexpected creative signs, sculptures, large installations, paintings and photographs provide a variegated overview of the research of artists all over the world. The galleries of the Dialogue/Monologue section, on the other hand, present more intimate pieces, which are nevertheless equally capable of activating resonance and stimulating reflection. PALAZZO MADAMA - Museo Civico d’Arte Antica The Corte Medievale, the historic core of Palazzo Madama, welcomes about 30 works selected together with galleries of the 2020, 2019 and 2018 editions of New Entries, the youngest and most experimental galleries open for a maximum of 5 years. Orchestrated by Ilaria Bonacossa and Valerio Del Baglivo, in this atmosphere the theme of frenetic standstill takes on a disturbing and vaguely supernatural character. In the Corte, the location of Frenetic Standstill, the various phases of construction of the building are visible, from the remains of the Porta Romana (or “Decumana”) to the medieval arches. MAO Museo d’Arte Orientale MAO puts a selection of 10 “orientalist” works into dialogue with the museum’s collections, therefore included in the visit itinerary. Viewers are involved in a special treasure hunt through the historic building that now contains the museum. The contrast between past and present leads to reflections on the way contemporary art formulates a response to a varied history of formal, spiritual and artisanal factors. The exhibition reveals the in-depth research conducted by a number of galleries, to discover the developments of contemporary art in the East. The theme frenetic standstill prompts reflections on the concept of acceleration as opposed to inertia, and on the increasingly urgent need to change our paradigms and to seek possible responses to the present crisis. Responses through cultural and social evolution conveyed by art, has always borne witness to histories and civilizations in the past, while acting as a catalyst of the most innovative visions. The theme ignites the most recent debates and is a timely representation of what we have lived through in the past months in different modes of lockdown. Ilaria Bonacossa comments on the exhibitions hosted by Fondazione Torino Musei: “We are truly happy to finally be able to open the physical doors of these exhibitions, the result of so much work and the synergistic cohesion between Artissima and its Galleries. To rethink Artissima in just a few weeks has been a challenge prompted by the desire not to abandon the first-hand experience of art. The lively, intense discussion with the galleries has been an opportunity to realize that only by working together is it possible to cope with a complex moment like the present. The selection was far from simple, because we had to take multiple variables into account, from the geographical origin of the works to their sizes, as well as the themes suggested by each item. The presentation has taken form in an attempt to bring out the particular facets of each path of research, in a sometimes jarring dialogue that is nevertheless full of vitality and visual force. The exceptional character of the situation has been transformed into an opportunity to experiment with a different mode of encounter between art, galleries and collectors”. The Stasi Frenetica exhibitions – set up and ready to be visited from 5 November 2020 – have been the subject of intense digital fruition in recent months, from the 3D virtual tours made in collaboration with Artland (GAM, Palazzo Madama and MAO) and the Digital Walkie Talkies on YouTube. The exhibitions have been organised with the support of Fondazione per l’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea CRT and Camera di commercio di Torino. FOLLE The exhibition FOLLE (Crowds), featuring a selection of historic photos chosen by Ilaria Bonacossa, director of Artissima, and Barbara Costa, head of the historical archive of Intesa Sanpaolo, is also on view for the public at GAM until 12 February 2021. The result of the new partnership between Artissima and Intesa Sanpaolo, with its eloquent title the show sets out to contribute to an understanding of the most authentic meaning of a term whose widespread connotation today is connected with the negative concept of social proximity and gatherings. The selected photographs stand out for the variety of their subjects, at times unexpected, shown in different situations and historical moments: the folla (crowd) can be very orderly, but also very unruly; it can be the protagonist, but also part of the background; it can be seen, but also simply imagined. The exhibition is also online on a specific digital platform: a big virtual wall on which to display the selected works, each with comments on the socio-political context in which the image was shot. JaguArt – The Italian Talent Road Show Also at GAM until 12 February 2021, Artissima and Jaguar present the group show of the 10 winners of the JaguArt – The Italian Talent Road Show: a true voyage in pursuit of young talents, thanks to the dialogue between Artissima and Jaguar Land Rover that began in 2019, based on a shared desire to support emerging art and to trigger fertile long-term synergies of collaboration. The winners are: Matteo Pizzolante, winner of the first appointment in Milan, Luca Arboccò – Turin, Francesco Tagliavia – Catania, Camilla Gurgone – Rome, Boris Contarin – Venice, Stefano Giuri – Florence, Marco-Augusto Basso – Genoa, Teresa Gargiulo – Naples, Camilla Riscassi – Bologna, and Federica Francesconi – Brescia. The 10 finalists are also the protagonists of a second exhibition set up in the Jaguar Land Rover Lounge at the Chalet de l’Ange in Courmayeur which will open to the public soon. Both the shows can be explored online thanks to a special guided tour conducted by the director of Artissima Ilaria Bonacossa and through two specific 3D virtual tours, with in-depth commentaries for each work.
