New MU policies released in response to Fall 2015 protests Last Thursday, the Ad Hoc Joint Committee on Protests, Public Spaces, Free Speech and the Press released its approved, revised and new policies regarding free speech and protests on campus. The new policies ban camping on university grounds, the use of bullhorns and attaching signs to the interior or exterior of university buildings. Read more about the new policies here. Column: Greek life pairings should not be gender-based Columnist Bizzy Emerson explains why dismantling the years-long tradition would be valuable, allowing chapters of the same gender bonding opportunities. “I personally would love to work alongside another sorority during Homecoming. I feel it would aid in cultivating deeper relationships between PHA chapters, as well as promote unity among women working toward a common goal. While I’ve enjoyed working with fraternities in the past, this is would be an interesting and dynamic change that would make Homecoming and Greek Week totally unique and new experiences.” Read the rest here. Cheyenne Baxter pitched two complete games and ended the Tigers’ five-game losing streak. Tigers baseball lost both games in a doubleheader against Texas A&M Friday, with scores of 11-1 and 7-1. More sports news: The NFL draft took place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from Thursday to Saturday. Mizzou Defensive End Charles Harris was taken at No. 22 in the first round by the Miami Dolphins. Mizzou Energy Action Coalition calls for UM System to divest from fossil fuels Calling for a divestment from all fossil fuel stock by 2020, the MEAC resolution passed unanimously in a joint session of 11 student organizations. The UM System currently has $10 million invested in fossil fuel stock and companies; MEAC president Frankie Hawkins said calling for divestment means the university would sell its stock in those companies. With the support of the joint session, MEAC will present its resolution to President Mun Choi on May 3. Board of Curators discusses possible tuition and fee increases A plan proposed at the April 27 Board of Curators meeting calls for a 2.1 percent increase in both resident and nonresident tuition. Trulaske College of Business and College of Engineering students could see a 9.5 percent and 6 percent increase in supplemental fees, respectively. These fees do not appear on tuition cost estimates. Courtesy of Flickr. Carrie Fisher shares her spotlighted life through her writing Star Wars icon Carrie Fisher died on Dec. 27, 2016, but her life lives on in the books she wrote. In The Princess Diarist, which is a compilation of journals she kept while filming Star Wars, she writes about her weed-and-sex-filled affair with Harrison Ford. Fisher struggled publicly with bipolar disorder and drug addiction, and that comes out in her books, too. “No topic is off limits,” MOVE senior staff writer Nat Kaemmerer writes. “It’s like she’s reliving all this for the first time and breaking it down for both her audience and herself.” Read the rest of the review here. Curators stall in naming new residence hall after black journalist Lucile Bluford Despite a request from the Residence Halls Association to name the newest residence hall after black journalist Lucile Bluford, the UM System Board of Curators has not moved on the issue. This would be the first building on MU’s campus named after a black woman. Interim Chancellor Garnett Stokes (Maneater file photo) Garnett Stokes appointed interim chancellor, Gary Ward appointed interim vice chancellor for student affairs UM System President Mun Choi announced the appointments in an email to students, staff and faculty Tuesday morning. Stokes will replace interim chancellor Hank Foley and begin her term May 3. As another school year draws to a close, McDaniel looks back on his time as the 48th speaker of MSA senate and leaves some parting advice for younger students. Read more about it here. Editorial: The UM Board of Curators should vote on a new hall name The Residence Hall Association has already voted on and submitted a request to name the new residence hall after Lucile Bluford, an african-american woman repeatedly denied admission to MU due to her skin color. The board has claimed that it has not decided to vote due to vacancies on the board, despite voting on other measures without a full board.
