The Motivation and the Purpose of the Study 2017 Summer Universiade took place in Taipei, and many people followed it closely. It was the third time that Taiwan hosted an important international sports event after The World Games 2009 and The 21st Summer Deaflympics. During the course of the Universiade events, everyone in Taiwan was actively involved, such as watching TV broadcasts, buying tickets to spectate on the scene, and cheering on the players or teams they admired. All of us without exception were immersed in the lively atmosphere. In the process of watching these events, we were inspired to find out what influences that Summer Universiade would bring to the young people. The Summer Universiade is known as the “Little Summer Olympics,” it “incorporates educational and cultural aspects, encouraging student-athletes from around the world to combine high sports performance with their intellectual pursuits.” (FISU, 2018) The 2017 Summer Universiade is the largest international sports event ever held in Taiwan. The host city Taipei put a large sum of money and efforts into it, even building a new player village for it. With the biggest expectation of letting the world see Taiwan, the 2017 Summer Universiade was also of great significance in uniting the hearts of Taiwanese people. Therefore, we would like to know whether the 29th Summer Universiade has influenced Taiwan’s development and cultural changes, especially its impact on the young people. We are wondering whether a blood-boiling summer has left a deep memory for the young, raised their passion for sports, and increased Taiwan's international popularity. I. 2. Research Questions The research questions proposed in this study are as follows. RQ1. Have people paid more attention to sports because of the 2017 Summer Universiade? RQ2. Has the 2017 Summer Universiade promoted adolescent’ passion for sports? RQ3. Has the 2017 Summer Universiade increased Taiwan's international reputation? II. Methods II. 1. Participants There were 120 subjects. Some of them are students in Hsi-Hu Senior High School, and the others are college students. Participants included 20 college students and 100 senior high students. Girls accounted for 26.7% of the subjects, and boys 73.3%. 1 Adolescents’ Points of View on the 2017 Summer Universiade II. 2 Instrument In order to know young people’s views about what effects the 2017 Summer Universiade has caused, we created a questionnaire as the instrument of the study. The 10 questions in this questionnaire were all designed by us. Besides personal profile, the questionnaire is divided into three aspects. The first part is to what extent young people are concerned about the 2017 Summer Universiade. The second is to what degree the 2017 Summer Universiade has changed young people’s exercise habit. The last is adolescents’ opinions about the influences that the 2017 Summer Universiade has brought on Taiwan’s international reputation. Part I To what extent young people are concerned about the 2017 Summer Universiade 1. Do you pay more attention to Taiwanese athletes because of the 2017 Summer Universiade? 2. Have you actually been to the scene to watch the athletes play? 3. Do you get to understanding more of the rules of a certain sport because of the Universiade? Part II To what degree the 2017 Summer Universiade has changed adolescents’ exercise habit 4. Do you increase the frequency of exercise in a week because of the Universiade? 5. Do you increase the time of exercise in a week because of the Universiade? 6. Have you ever bought any products endorsed by the athletes? 7. Following the previous question, which products have you bought? Part III Adolescents’ opinions about the influences the 2017 Summer Universiade has brought on Taiwan’s international reputation. 8. Do you think that more foreigners have known about Taiwan through the international media report of the 2017 Summer Universiade? 9. Do you think that the 2017 Summer Universiade has let the foreign athletes have a chance to know more about the culture of Taiwan? 10. Have you ever seen any posts about the 2017 Summer Universiade shared or forwarded by foreigners on the social media? II. 3 Data Processing We first conducted a paper questionnaire survey and then entered the data into Excel. Afterwards, the results were converted into pie or bar charts for us to analyze and present. III. Results and Discussion 2 Adolescents’ Points of View on the 2017 Summer Universiade III. 1. To what extent young people are concerned about the 2017 Summer Universiade Based on Figure 1, over half of the teenagers (61%) have shown concern for Taiwanese athletes due to the 2017 Summer Universiade. Among them, 38% of the subjects agree that they pay more attention to Taiwanese athletes because of the 2017 Summer Universiade, and 23% of the subjects totally agree. This may show that the 2017 Summer Universiade has made more Taiwanese athletes able to come to the fore and be seen by the world. (N=120) According to the results of Figure 2, most of the young people have not been to the scene to watch the competition although the event has been an overwhelming victory. (N=120) In Figure 3, nearly 40% of teenage students (38%) said they have got to understand the rules of a certain sport because of the 2017 Summer Universiade. One of the possible goals of the event might have been achieved to a certain degree. The earlier a person is infected with the atmosphere of the sport, the better their exercise spirit can be developed. Although 22% of teens still don't know 3 Adolescents’ Points of View on the 2017 Summer Universiade more about the rules of the sport in the 2017 Summer Universiade, but this result has been a great encouragement for the first-time host city. To what degree the 2017 Summer Universiade has changed adolescents’ exercise habit In accordance with Figure 4 and 5, only a few people hence increase their frequency and time of exercise in a week. From these statistics, we can find that though adolescents are more concerned about sports owing to the 2017 Summer Universiade, most young people just change their way of looking at sports instead of making actual related actions. (N=120) In the light of Figure 6, it is clear that almost 90% of people do not buy sporting goods endorsed by athletes. Although it is obvious that the Universiade successful captured people’s attention, the adolescents are still rational enough to distinguish between what they need and what is useful. (N=5) (Multiple answers allowed) III. 3. Adolescents’ opinions about the influences the 2017 Summer Universiade has brought on Taiwan’s international reputation. Judging from Figure 8, it can be seen that nearly 90% of people agree with this view. So, it could be interpreted that the 2017 Summer Universiade has enough promotion to attract foreigners to pay close attention to Taiwan on account of the international sports event. And there is no doubt that Taiwan’s international reputation has been raised. (N=120) On the basis of Figure 9, it is revealed that most of the subjects think the 2017 Summer Universiade gave a chance to foreign athletes to know more about the culture of Taiwan. It 6 Adolescents’ Points of View on the 2017 Summer Universiade represents that the event not only put emphasis on sports, but also certainly had a positive influence on cultural aspect.
