It has involved tracing casual records to their sources, and proving their authenticity by documentary evidence, thus clearing fact from tradition. Interwoven in the drab of the fabric various accounts from the romantic past have appeared, thus adding to the cold facts of vital records, interesting threads of color. It has been the purpose of the compiler to establish the ancestry of William Clopton of York (now New Kent) County, Virginia. To this end she has made repeated visits to England where authentic documents were consulted. This search of the source records made personally, has been rewarded through her persistent effort. With the assurance that what she now offers to Clopton descendants is a solid structure, built on documentary evidence, she begs to state that, having proved the English lineage of William Clop ton of York County, Virginia, her real task is finished. But in addition ap attempt has been made to add to this, a record of his American descendants to the ninth generation, accompanied by copies of several documents obtained from personal research in this country. Great effort has been m.'\Cle to secure accuracy but for errors that may appear in family data she begs the kind indulgence of the reader. During the past summer, 1939, there were such rewarding results in Epgland of a hitherto baffling search for the maternal ancestry of William Clopton, that the publication of the book was delayed to include them. (See Jolye-Sutcliffe Notes and four wills in Addenda.) In presenting abstracts of original records the spelling of names therein employed has been followed even when variously spelled in the same document. The ar:·angement of this volume is simple. Each child is given a number, and a plus sign before the name indicates that the said child is carried for ward as a family number, which development is carried on throughout the book. A chapter is devoted to English and American Wills, but it seemed feasible to place charters, deeds, etc., with the generation concerned. As far as possible definite pages of reference books used have been_indicated but a list is given of source material. [vii J ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Herein is expressed my sincere thanks and gratitude to all who, in what ever way, have aided in this work, but special mention is due Mrs. A. E.
