Texan Dome e Commencement Ceremony e Commencement Ceremony, as a whole, arms the value of learning to society and recognizes the cooperation of many people, on and o campus, who have contributed to the learning enterprise. Above all, it celebrates the eort and achievements, as symbolized by diplomas, degrees and gowns, of the graduates themselves. e Academic Costume e origin of the academic costumes worn in commencement ceremonies can be traced to the Middle Ages, when long-sleeved, hooded South Plains College Board of Regents gowns were necessary for warmth in the unheated stone college. ese garments were worn at all academic events, including lectures. Mike Box, Chairman Each European college or university had its set of garments indicating the status of the wearers. In the United States, an intercollegiate system of academic costumes has been used since 1894, and the garments are worn chiey on ceremonial occasions. Bobby Neil, Vice Chairman Wearing the academic costumes symbolizes the placing of scholarship, that is the attempt to be intellectually honest, above personal Ronny Alexander, Secretary preference and current fashion. e academic procession symbolizes the continuity of the tradition of learning and the search for truth Pete Pettiet in its various forms through the centuries. It is meant to communicate the feeling that such an eort is of value however imperfect it may be. Richard Ellis e design of the gown indicates the degree attained. e Bachelor’s is a simple gown with a full sleeve. e Master’s gown is similar, except for the sleeve which extends to a point. e Doctor’s gown is more elaborate and quite full. It has velvet edging and three velvet Academic and Administrative Ocers of the College stripes on the sleeve. e color of this velvet may be black or the color appropriate to the degree. Academic gowns which dier from these Dr. Robin Satterwhite, President characteristics are those worn by persons who have received their degrees from universities outside the United States. Dr. Ryan Gibbs, Vice President for Academic Aairs Hoods of varying sizes are worn over the gowns and are generally reserved for the Master’s and Doctor’s gowns. e hood has velvet edging, the color of which indicates the area of specialization, as does the tassel on the cap. e academic colors include the following: Teresa Green, Vice President for Business Aairs Apricot – Nursing Drab – Business Orange – Engineering Dr. Stan DeMerritt, Vice President for Student Aairs Dark Blue – Philosophy Green – Medicine Pink – Music Stephen John, Vice President for Institutional Advancement Light Blue – Education Green Sage – Physical Education Purple – Law Brown – Fine Arts Lemon – Library Science Scarlet – eology Alan Worley, Dean of Arts and Sciences Citron – Social Sciences Maize – Agriculture White – Arts and Letters Rob Blair, Dean of Technical Education Copper – Economics Maroon – Home Economics Golden Yellow – Science Jerry Findley, Dean of Health Sciences e inside of the hood is satin and indicates, by its colors and their arrangements, the college or university which granted the degree. Commencement Ceremony e Gold Stole and Gold Honor Cord indicate the graduate holds membership in the Kappa Mu Chapter of Phi eta Kappa Division of Arts and Sciences: Joy Christine Driver, candidate for the International Honor Society for students in two-year colleges. Associate of Science in General Studies from Lubbock e Red, White and Blue Cords honor students who are Military Veterans or who currently serve in one of the branches of the Division of Health Occupations: United States Armed Forces. Division of Technical Education: Alyssa J. Dempsey candidate for the Associate of Applied Science in Culinary Arts from Shallowater Graduation with Honors In order to qualify for designation as an honor graduate, a student must meet the following criteria. For the Associate Degree, the Division of Allied Health: Brooklyn Kay Carpenter candidate for the student must have completed at least 45 college-level semester credit hours at South Plains College when an application for graduation Associate of Applied Science in Radiology from Lubbock is submitted.
