This land resembles no other place. Sardinia is something else. Enchanting spaces and distances to travel nothing finished, nothing definitive. It is like freedom itself.” D.H. Lawrence, Sea and Sardinia (1921) elcome to our special island, here at the very center of the Mediterranean Sea. If you arrive by boat you float in on an Emerald color, if you fly in below you are looking at stunning majestic canyons and the geometries of the Nuragic civilization. WYou enter a variety of untouched natural sites and an incredible human patrimony, one of the planet’s five blue zones, a place where longevity, quality of life and a strong community generate a powerful source of inspiration and well-being. Clean air, precious water, a love for the mother-land that makes you feel in some ancestral world, magically projected out of time, entered even when you taste our Cannonau wine or you discover how our crunchy thin Carasau bread is gently cooked. And if you are lucky, after dinner you might follow the crowd in the square, listening to poets improvising in the Sardo Language or singing a ‘tenore’, one of the island’s distinctive throat-songs. Not to mention the wedding ceremonies unfolding in our many caves, where people dance endlessly in circles to ensure fertility. In Sardinia you will be surrounded by a rich soundscape softened by trees and incredible medical herbs. A real patrimony: each seed is precious. We take it very seriously. When a baby is born, the first gift that is given by the neighbors is a cup of local seeds, to guarantee eternal life to the young family and to help insure our precious biodiversity. Hospitality for us is essential and a part of who we are so... as our head of production Ms. Lynch suggests... We just hope that your return ticket is refundable!!! 3 4 ASSOCIATION OF THE ITALIAN ANIMATION PRODUCERS Anne-Sophie Vanhollebeke President of Cartoon Italia artoon Italia is the national association of the Italian animation companies. It was founded in the early 1990s to support and promote industrial and artistic interests of animation on the Italian national territory and abroad. It has established strategic relations with public Cauthorities and private institutions, universities and TV channels. The Italian film and television animation branch involves about 80 companies including over 30 producers focused on original production and over 40 animation service companies. It is able to provide hundreds of hours of animation TV programmes per year thanks to RAI, the Italian Public Broadcaster, and to the co-production agreements with European partners. Since 2017, the Italian animation industry is in full growth thanks to a government and a law on cinema and audio-visual that encourage not only the development of companies but also the international co-productions. The new law by the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities has seen a selective and automatic fund made available to Italian producers for the animation development, pre-production and production and a tax-credit at 30% for animation co-production. Given the future growth prospects of the sector, last October in Rome Cartoon Italia has challenged the Film Commissions operating in the Italian regions to create “Image hubs” on their territory following the example of the French Pole Image Magelis. Six regions answered the call, including Sardinia Region, which, with its centres of excellence in the digital communication sector, launched the start up “NAS” (New Animation Sardinia). Cartoon Italia is grateful to CARTOON, the Sardinia Region and its Film Commission for organizing the master “Cartoon Digital” in Cagliari, a strategic event for the development of the “Image Hubs” and the growth of animation in Italy. 5 6 Marc Vandeweyer General Director of CARTOON n today’s on demand world, many new routes have opened up for animation producers to successfully increase the presence of their works on the many digital screens. With audiences accessing more video and interactive content through their own devices and at their chosen Itime, the relationship between content creators and their viewers has become more direct and can only continue to grow. As new findings reveal audiences massive shifts to OTT and SVoD services, broadcasters, producers and distributors are shaping strategies to carve out their share of this new digital landscape which underpins growing competition for more global content, new direct-to-consumer approaches and kids’ new entertainment patterns. This is why for this year’s edition of Cartoon Digital, we have convened a prestigious line-up of 32 forward-thinking speakers from 9 European countries and Canada to showcase how animation producers can benefit from creating and growing their brands on multiple platforms. As new content and players emerge, the more traditional and commercial approaches to deal- making are also disrupted and media groups and rights owners will present case studies on how to engage with audiences and fans to hit profitable business models. Complemented by innovative moves from VR/AR creators of immersive contents, converging approaches from digital publishers and game developers, the diverse programme will offer a good vision of the main creative and economic dynamics at play. We wish to thank wholeheartedly our long-standing partner Creative Europe - MEDIA, the energetic support of the Fondazione Sardegna Film Commission, as well as our friends of Cartoon Italia for their very active involvement to bring this year’s event on this beautiful and sustainable island. We wish participants a great event where we hope you will acquire new skills, enlarge your networking base and fine-tune your digital projects. 7 PROGRAMME MONDAY 20 MAY COACHING PROGRAMME FOR JUNIOR PROFESSIONALS Italian Professionals to the Rescue!
