THE great improvements which w ere made in the roads of E ngland during the earlier years of the nineteenth century produced , as one result , great changes in the method of building passenger carriages . These alterations were not only apparent in the coaches , post chaises and vehicles for travel : a ling taste had undergone marked ch nge . The clumsy State carriages used by the nobility o f the eighteenth century gradually went out of fashion , and from about the year 1 800 coachbuilders had been endeavouring to produce a graceful outline of body, which body was made no larger than the co n v en i ence of the occupants required . I n every capital of Europe such carriages had replaced the old clumsy style of vehicle , and London and Paris supplied other coun “ w tries ith most of the new State carriages . Carriages of all kinds were vastly improved ’ during our late Queen s reign ; but for the parents of modern improvements we must ' look farther back . M r . Obadiah Elliott s invention of the elliptical spring in 1 80 4 was the foundation upon which co u ntless improve ments have been built . f V V s . o e t Messrs Elliott and H olbrook , minster B ridge , appear to have been the pioneers of the movement which eventually dispensed with the heavy perch under R e ositor o A r i s carriages . I n the p y f , Li ler a tu r e Com m er ce (5 1 1 80 , , , of 9 , an eccentric landaulet built by this firm is de “ scribed as a thrilling example o f the a ston ishin g improvements which of late years have been made in every article of con ” v en ien ce and luxury . This carriage was “ distinguished by being - without perch , wings , axle tree beds , transom beds or plates , so that the weight is much r reduced . I t is mo e compact than carriages can be built on any other principle , and answers all the purpose of a crane neck , ” u as it will t rn in a smaller compass . The famous Samuel H obson began his 8 2 1 0 . invaluable labours about the year M r .
