FIRST HALF IN BOOKS--Last night’s loss to the Mariners mercifully closed the books on the worst first half in franchise history as the Royals managed only 25 wins in the first 81 games...the previous low was a 26-win first half in 2005, when that club wound up 56-106...KC finished up the first half with the second fewest wins in the Majors, as Baltimore brought up the rear with just 23...the Royals start the second half ranking 30th in the Majors in runs scored (284), tied for 22nd in hitting (.238), 28th in on-base pct (.300) and 29th in slugging (.364)...it hasn’t been all about the offense, as the mound staff enters the second half 30th in ERA (5.19), runs allowed (439), earned runs allowed (416) and 29th in opponents batting average (.272)...the two home runs allowed last night upped the big league leading total to 118 roundtrippers surrendered. RISPY BUSINESS--Last night’s fourth-inning double play was the 33rd this year hit by Kansas City with a runner in scoring position, tops in the Majors...on the year, KC is hitting a big-league low .218 with runners in scoring position. NEW MONTH STARTS TOMORROW--The Royals will be one club that will be happy to see the month of June come to an end as last night’s loss clinched the lowest win total in June in franchise history...the previous low was seven wins during the second season in team history in 1970, while KC enters tonight with a 5-20 ledger...the Royals have scored four or fewer runs in 20 of the last 21 games, which included a streak of 19 in a row that was halted in Wednesday’s win at Milwaukee... Kansas City has scored a big league low 54 runs this month, 28 fewer than the runner-up Tampa Bay Rays (82)...the Royals have batted only .191 as a unit (153-for- 803), the only squad in the Majors hitting below .200 this month...the Royals have eclipsed the double-digit hit mark only once in June with a dozen hits in a June 4 loss in Anaheim...for the record the 1981 Royals went 5-5 in June, but the month was cut short due to a work stoppage.
