Because of the high number of petitions filed against the project, DER officials decided to visit Silver Key and hold the hearings on Tuesday and Wednesday, June 19 and 20, in Council Chambers (MacKenzie Hall) at Sanibel City Hall. The results of the hearing will affect the value of Silver Key, a barrier island off Sanibel which the city and the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation would like to see forever preserved in its natural state. The City Council has expressed a "cautious interest" in purchasing the island to protect it from development. In mid-February City Attorney Bob Pritt filed a document formally objecting to the DER's intent to issue a permit for the construction of a bridge and causeway to Silver Key.
