Year KGU Summer School, 2018 Course Title JSC Japanese Culture Program Duration June 12-July 11, 2018 Credits 2 Instructor's name Dr. Kikuyo Tanaka, Professor Emeritus, Kwansei Gakuin University Subtitle Japanese Cultural History : Wabi, Sabi, and Kawaii I wish to describe Japanese cultural history from the Edo period to today, particularly by focusing on Course Objectives what is "wabi" and "sabi" or "kawaii". Moreover, I will explain some foreign influence over Japanese cultures, especially right after the Meiji Restoration. I wish the students to get precise information on how Japanese popular cultures have developed since Attainment Objectives the Edo period, and to understand how the features such as Wabi, Sabi, or Kawaii have been made. 1 Introduction 2-6 Emergence of New Culture in the Edo Period: Popular Culture in the 'Genroku' and ’Kasei' Days Edo Literature: Focusing on the Comic Novels Written by Juppen-Shaikku Haiku: Focusing on the Travel Diaries Written by Basho Kabuki Drama Religion including Zen and "Ise Pilgrimage" Lifestyle as Seen in Ukiyo-e Prints in the Edo Period 7-8 Excursion to Hieizan Enryakuji Course Contents of 9-11 European and American Cultural Influence After the Meiji Restoration Each Session "Senryu": By Analyzing Satire Haiku Translation Culture: By Analyzing translated Foreign Books Changes as Seen in Clothes, Food, and Housing for Japanese 12-14 Kawaii Culture as seen in Japanese Manga Edo-Manga, esp.
