It is a young, user-friendly city made up of seven districts. Fukuoka is the center of government, economics, culture, and fashion for Kyushu. It is a city with distinct character, combining the charm of a major metropolis with the beauty of Hakata Bay, along with the rich and vibrant culture and tradition that has evolved over centuries. Hakata-ku (One of seven wards in Fukuoka) Academic Program: This program explores the culture of past and present Japan while immersing the student in the language of the country. Eligibility Requirements: Program is open to undergraduate and graduate students with an overall GPA of 2.5/3.0 or higher. Courses: Students will take Japanese Traditional and Pop Culture through Experience and one Japanese language course. JPN 4957 Japanese Traditional and Pop Culture through Experience (3 credits) JPN 2952 Beginning Japanese Language and Culture (4 credits) JPN 2952 Intermediate Japanese Language and Culture (4 credits) JPN 4957 Advance Japanese Language and Culture (3 credits) Program Fee: $3,730 Program Fee Includes: Housing (studio apartments w/ private kitchen and bath), 7 Shinjuku Gyoen (Park in day rail pass for last week of program, group transportation for excursions, homestay visit, admission fees and proposed group activities (Tenjin tour, Gion Tokyo) Yamakasa Festival, Kabuki Theater, tour Hakata Station and local temples, tea ceremony, anime/software company visit, visit hot springs, calligraphy, ceramics, martial arts, karaoke, and art crafts), day trip to Dazaifu city, day trip to Miyajima, 2 day excursion to Kyoto (includes lodging, full-day of sightseeing on chartered bus with local guide and lunch), 4 day excursion to Tokyo (includes lodging, full-day of sightseeing on chartered bus with local guide and lunch, visit Shibuya and Ginza, Harajuku, Meiji Shrine, Akihabara, Tokyo Oedo Museum), three group meals, language books, some group supplies, pre-departure orientation, application fee, CISI health insurance, and on-site support staff. Program Fee Does Not Include: Airfare, FAU tuition (in-state/out-of-state rates apply), most meals, culture books, and spending money. Application Deadline: February 15 or as space permits Financial Aid: Students may be able to use their financial aid for study abroad. The amount of the financial aid awarded and its availability will be determined by the Shibuya Street, Tokyo Office of Financial Aid. Students need to have a current FAFSA on file and complete a summer Financial Aid Application in order to apply for funding.
