14th January 2020 East of England Risk Assessment for COVID-19 vaccination in care homes with cases and outbreaks Purpose This proforma has been developed to facilitate ongoing COVID-19 vaccination in care homes with confirmed cases or outbreaks of COVID-19 in accordance with national guidance. 1 It is imperative that the majority of residents in care homes for older adults receive prompt COVD-19 vaccination which may be the single most effective intervention to reduce avoidable mortality in this group (number of vaccinations to prevent one death = 20).2 This document should be completed by the PCN/ Provider lead vaccinator with the care home manager with advice from the local Health Protection SPOC (Annex) or CCG Infection Control Team. Background The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) have advised that the first priority group for receipt of COVID vaccination are residents in care homes for older adults and their carers.3 General principles Whilst vaccination against COVID may be temporarily deferred in some individuals e.g. acutely unwell or within four weeks of onset of COVID symptoms, all other care home residents and staff should receive prompt COVID vaccination, whether or not they have had COVID-19. This proforma is designed to assure lead vaccinators and care home mangers that it is safe to proceed with vaccination, having confirmed the necessary safeguards, in affected care homes.
