MONOCHROME PHOTO ITEMS NEEDED: • Camera ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: What is monochromatic color photograph? It is a photograph created in varying tones, shades, and tints of one color. Black and white photography is also monochrome but for this challenge we are looking for color! We are going to learn a little about color theory, and distinguish between the tint, tone, and shade of a color. Tint: When you add white to a color you create a tint of that color, or a lighter version of the color. In photography think about this as adding a light source to the color, or a highlight that brightens up the color. Tone: This is when you add gray to a color, it is like adding a little white and a little black, think on this as the mid tones of that color in the photograph. Shade: When you add black to a color you create a shade of that color. In photography think about casting a shadow on part of a color, now that color reads as a shade. There are three main options to create this type of a photograph. 1. Locate an existing monochromatic color scheme, think photographing blueberries. 2. Create a monochromatic scene, think arranging items that are all the same color together. 3. Edit your photograph to create a monochromatic color image. Things to try: • This time of year, Iowa is varying shades of browns! • Find interesting objects that are the same color and arrange them together. • Fill the frame with your subject to make sure that there are no other colors. • Look for a one-color object or structure that has interesting texture. • Try macro photography (up close photography). Things to avoid: • Multiple colors in your photograph. • Not filling the whole frame of your photograph. • Lack of focus. Share your photo with friends and family. You can also submit your photo to “Iowa 4-H Camera Corps” by March 31.
