He graduated from the Nihon University College of Art in 1984, and went on to continue his studies first in Tokyo at the National University of Fine Arts and Music, and then in New York at the New York Studio School in 1988. The artist’s view of the world has been formed through his relationship with his mother, a survivor of Hiroshima bomb. The ragged edged, almost wounded steel planes of his abstracted work reflect the horror of human destruction, and the poetic forms and materials reflect the Japanese notion of ‘chiritori’, the planet’s power to restore and heal itself. The artist writes of this work, “Peace is always a possibility, if enough people care, if enough people want it. Otherwise … the planet will die. It’s that simple.” Higashida has solo exhibitions regularly in New York and Tokyo and has participated in group exhibitions in Australia and USA.
