(Nov. 15, 2013) – Educators, parents and operators of after-school programs now have a powerful new teaching tool at their disposal, designed to improve math and critical thinking skills for students in fourth through eighth grades—the Ripken Baseball TiViTz Math Program. The program is based on the math and strategy game called TiViTz, which has been used as a part of the curriculum by more than 10,000 teachers and 400,000 students across the country, including schools in nearby Hillsborough County, Florida. Playing the popular Ripken Baseball version of the TiViTz board game at school or at home is just one part of the comprehensive program that makes math fun for kids. Teachers and parents who attend the informational workshops will learn how to maximize learning opportunities for students by combining game play with after-school practice sessions at “TiViTz Tuesdays” at participating McDonald’s® restaurants, where kids can improve their strategies by playing against students from other schools. Workshop attendees also will learn how to conduct and score in-school tournaments, and help students qualify for regional and championship tournaments, where they can compete for trophies, prizes and a total of $15,000 in college scholarships to be awarded in June 2014. Attendees also will receive information about how to receive a matching classroom set of TiViTz board games (14 per set) with each paid purchase of a classroom set, a $425 value. And, with each paid workshop registration of $25, attendees will receive a free TiViTz board game, a $30 value. The Ripken Baseball TiViTz Program featuring TiViTz Tuesdays was rolled out in Hillsborough County schools during the 2012-2013 school year with such great success that it is now being introduced in 12 surrounding counties, including Charlotte, Citrus, DeSoto, Hardee, Hernando, Highlands, Manatee, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk, Sarasota and Sumter. TiViTz is “a natural fit” in the new Common Core state standards in at least nine areas, attests former Hillsborough County math supervisor, Janet Bauman. “Fluency standards is an excellent spot for it to fit right in.” TiViTz was introduced recently at a conference for the Florida Association of Math Supervisors where it was well received. It also got high marks from the Florida Council of Teachers of Mathematics at their recent conference in Orlando. In short, the Ripken Baseball TiViTz Program is a home run for teachers, parents and kids. “Last year I had the opportunity to work with my fourth graders on TiViTz and attend the regional TiViTz tournament. We had the most wonderful experience,” said Lindsey Schenker, gifted teacher at Anderson Elementary School in Tampa, Fla. “Our school is very excited to be involved in TiViTz and will do whatever we can to build the program.” ABOUT TiViTz TiViTz® is a registered trademark of SAS Games, Inc.
