South Wales Main Line (SWML) – Aspirations & Proposals A major upgrade of the SWML in terms of capacity, line speed, rolling stock and widespread electrification, to enable: • Additional express services to Swansea and West Wales from London, Bristol Temple Meads and the English Midlands, as well as better access to Heathrow Airport. • Our journey time ambitions are: o Cardiff - London in 85 minutes o Cardiff - Swansea in 30 minutes o Cardiff - Bristol Temple Meads in 35 minutes o Cardiff - Carmarthen in 75 minutes • New local commuter services (including more services to Bristol Temple Meads) and further stations including: Cardiff Parkway, Llanwern, Newport Rd/Rover Way, To Hereford, Magor, M4 J33, St Clears, Cockett. Shrewsbury, Crewe & KKEYEY Ebbw Vale Manchester Piccadilly • Address major network bottlenecks on the SWML at Ebbw Line Park junction and Cardiff West and upgrade Marches, Ebbw Valley and Maesteg lines. Town (Marches line) Stations: • Interchange at key hubs between express SWML services and our Metros, local commuter rail, new tram-train (incl. Cardiff Crossrail/NW Corridor and Swansea Metro Major/new station service) and bus services right across South Wales from Milford Haven to Severn Tunnel Junction. To Danescourt and Abertillery Radyr (City Line/ Minor/intermediate station Cardiff Circle) Services: Llanhilleth 1tph service 0.5tph service To Waterhall, Plas Dŵr, J33 P&R and Abergavenny < 0.5tph / irregular service Creigiau (Cardiff Crossrail and NW Corridor) Onward service Maesteg To Bassaleg, Machen, Timescales: Bedwas & Caerphilly To Ammanford, Llandeilo, Fairwater Llandrindod Wells, Knighton Existing base & committed & Shrewsbury (Heart of Wales line) Short-term aspirations Fishguard Tredegar Park Further proposals (subject to more detailed Harbour To Cardiff Queen Street (Core Valley Ely Mill Lines – Not all services shown) scheme and business case development) Caerleon Newport West For illustrative purposes only.
