Welcome to the Fairfield County premiere of this wonderfully funny new musical. I enjoyed this show on Broadway so much that I couldn’t wait for it to become available for us to produce, so I was thrilled that we were offered the early release on it, like we have had withMamma Mia, Elf, Kinky Boots and more. Knowing that the licensing agency trusts us to present their shows first, is very rewarding. Something Rotten gives us something to really laugh at...always good in the dark of winter... but it also gives us a somewhat historical and definitely hysterical look at the 1590s. I love the show’s tongue-in cheek wit; a loving parody of both Broadway and Shakespeare—who doesn’t just love parody? It also has the best comic production number since the walker dance in The Producers. One of the other big musical numbers in the show—“God I Hate Shakespeare”—speaks volumes. How many of you have had the same thought? You’re not alone because generations have been turned off to the works of The Bard having been forced to read them at a young age. His plays were meant to be seen, not read. When done well, actors make the words and rhythms far more understandable—actually enjoyable. Unfortunately, getting people to come see a Shakespeare play can be challenging because of those early, negative experiences. (NOTE: Come try our annual Shakespeare on the Green this summer—it’s free and a title you’ll recognize: Romeo and Juliet.) Free outdoor Shakespeare doesn’t come cheaply, nor does everything else we do here, so we do lots of fundraising. That being said, the best way for you to help us is to make a contribution of as little as $10. on Thursday, February 27—Fairfield County Giving Day. This 24-hour period of online giving hosted by Fairfield County’s Community Foundation, over the past six years, has allowed us to raise money and also compete for significant cash bonuses. We hope you can help in two ways: 1) by making a contribution and 2) by asking friends and family to contribute to support your community theatre. If you have any questions, just give me a call. For now, enjoy your trip back to the 1590s with Something Rotten—enjoy the show! Sincerely, Lou Ursone Executive Director Curtain Call, Inc.
