2010 Event Report The best ‘Mallory’ yet! The stars, the participants and the weather all combined to give the record crowds a weekend to remember. The VMCC Festival of 1000 Bikes is now an accepted and an essential fixture on the motorcyclist’s calendar. We now talk of “Mallory” or “1000 Bikes” and every motorcyclist knows what you mean. This opportunity for the owners of both road and track machines to experience riding on a genuine race circuit at their own pace and in the company of like-minded enthusiasts is so attractive that the event was over-subscribed yet again. But it’s more than that. It is now one of those occasions where you are likely to meet everyone you ever knew in your world of motorcycling. Where you see the famous in informal and accessible situations and where you make new acquaintances, see unique and/or rare machines, where you learn more about motorcycle history and technology and where you are able to savour the sights, the sounds and the aromas of machines of a bygone age. Whilst the key attractions are out on the track, the exponents of Vintage Grass-track and the more relaxed devotees of the “Pre-1965 Trials” put on demonstrations of their activities in the out- field areas and the VMCC Sprint section staged dramatic demonstrations of their skills to a vast and appreciative crowd on the track at Sunday Lunch time. Sunday afternoon saw the ‘Past Masters’ led by Freddie Spencer on his Honda RS500 and Carl Fogarty MBE on his Ducati 996 showing us the skills, the style and the panache that made them so successful. The wide variety of machines and their ability to move fast and furiously was a great delight to the many spectators who thronged the circuit on the Sunday afternoon, many of whom joined long queues in the race paddock to add new autographs to their collections. The weather stayed warm and dry for the whole of the weekend, which encouraged exploring the road and the race paddocks for interesting and unusual machines and for visiting the ‘Avenue of Clubs’ where it was possible to learn more about some of the (over 50) one-make club’s in attendance. Whilst everything seemed to run on well-oiled wheels, a big vote of thanks must go to all of those volunteer marshals who worked long and hard before, during and after the event to make sure that it did! No specific names, because the contributions of everyone involved all combined together to make the 2010 Festival a weekend to remember. VMCC CEO with Freddie Spencer before his parade session The VMCC Festival of 1000 Bikes gives 3 awards every year for best post war machine, best Pre war machine and best Club stand from within the massive 50 strong Ave of Clubs. ACU Permit No. CT/13745 The Taverners have been putting on Vintage Trials in the Leicestershire area for many years from the time when Vintage (as in Pre 1930 machines including “flat tankers”) were used. More “modern” machines became eligible as the VMCC’s 25 year eligibility rule moved on with a colonial class for (virtually) Road Machines which ran for a time alongside the Trials Bikes on a modified course. When the 25 year rule reached 1957 it was decided to keep this as a cut-off date for eligibility, with machines up to 1965 invited as “guests”. We aim to try to encourage the continued use of the girder/rigid and tele/rigid with lesser entry fees and courses not so demanding as most Trials. We run a winter series October to April of 7 Trials at various venues around Leicestershire many on old disused railway sites. These courses feature not many rocks or too many death defying sections with the aim of encouraging older machines to be brought along. We have entries from riders past three score years and ten, alongside youngsters from 10 years upward. It’s often a family affair with many Fathers, Sons & Granddads taking part plus our very good young lady rider. Machinery taking part is very varied from 600cc Levis to all sorts of smelly Two Strokes, (hopefully they will graduate to a nice four stroke), with AJ’S, Bullets, Beezers, Fanny Barnetts, Trophy’s, James’, Ariels etc. In June every year we also run a non-competitive trial for any age of machine to encourage anybody to “come and have a go”. Make sure you come and see us making the best use of our “mud pluggers” on the Saturday of the Festival weekend in the wooded area adjacent to “Gerards” Bend.
