NEWS RELEASE July 2, 2014 Local Youth Headed To the 2014 Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit & Run Carmelo Hernandez, 12, of Santa Maria is set to compete next week at the Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit & Run presented by Scotts National Finals during the MLB All-Star festivities in Minneapolis, Minn. Hernandez, who will be representing the LA Dodgers, is one of 24 National Finalists who will take part in an array of MLB All-Star festivities, including shagging fly balls in the outfield during Monday night's Gillette Home Run Derby. Over 600,000 boys and girls, ages 7-14, competed this spring in the official skills program of Major League Baseball for an opportunity to advance to the National Finals in Minnesota. Pitch, Hit & Run (PHR) invites youth to demonstrate their skills by competing in pitching, hitting and running competitions. PHR participants advance through four levels of competition, beginning at the local level, which was hosted by the City of Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department, and continuing through sectional and team competitions. All 30 MLB Clubs hosted team championships at their ballparks on weekends from May 31 through June 29. The top three competitors nationwide from each age group (7-8, 9-10, 11-12 and 13-14) advanced to the 2014 Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit & Run program presented by Scotts National Finals.
