Mississippi Mud Ever play a word game? Here’s one, Mississippi Mud. What comes to mind? Mississippi mud pie? This originated in the state of Mississippi. A rich, sticky chocolate sauce topped with a crumbly chocolate crust and maybe a scoop or two of vanilla ice cream. Mississippi cake? This one has many versions, but try this…chocolate, crunchy pecans and marshmallows on a sheet tray. Mississippi beer? Yes, even a black and tan styled beer with its name from a brewery with the same name. And finally, Mississippi Mud, the song, written by Harry Barris in 1927, Ray Charles version, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UjlxzuWaSTI. According to the USGS, Mississippi mud has over 80 forms of sand, stone and other mineral deposits. A Mississippi Geological, Economic and Topographical Survey Bulletin (Jackson Mississippi, 1963) states that the mud can be yellow, red, blue to jet black in color. It also can contain numerous types of clay, other sediment and rock strata. Human interaction with the river has affected its flow, direction, quality and even potential destruction of wet lands and aquatic life. Furthermore, industrial pollution has added unwanted and undesirable toxic wastes. This influences water quality, especially to communities using the river for drinking water.
