The John Ulrich Piano Series Presents CARL SONNY LEYLAND & ETHAN LEINWAND with soloist VALERIE KIRCHHOFF Sunday, February 16th at 2:00PM Ethan Leinwand Carl Sonny Leyland Valerie Kirchhoff Born in England, Sonny took up piano at age 15. Inspired by the boogie woogie music of Albert Ammons, Pete Johnson and Meade Lux Lewis, he features Boogie Woogie and also excels at playing Blues and Barrelhouse piano, traditional jazz and ragtime. Sonny has toured both in Europe and the United States as a solo act and with a variety of bands such as Anson Funderburgh and the Rockets and Big Sandy and His Flyte Boys. He is featured regularly in the West Coast Ragtime Festival and the Sutter Creek Ragtime festival. In 2010, Sonny was inducted into the Boogie Woogie Hall of Fame. He has also performed at the International Boogie Woogie Festival at the SF Jazz Center. Sonny offers original music, and, authentically sings the blues. His originality & soulfulness make him one of today’s most exciting musicians. Ethan is a barrelhouse blues pianist and preservationist based in St. Louis. Ethan presents personal interpretations of many of the great old-time masters. He specializes in St. Louis prewar piano blues, Deep South & Texas barrelhouse, early Chicago boogie woogie , and good- time hokum stride. Originally from Middletown, CT, Ethan has lived in NYC and New Orleans. He moved to St. Louis in 2014 and quickly connected with the city’s thriving traditional music community. Ethan performs throughout the USA and Europe and is gaining recognition as one of the country’s leading exponents of barrelhouse blues piano. Valerie is a St. Louis based early blues & jazz singer known professionally as “Miss Jubilee.” She has been a fixture in the St. Louis music scene since 2007 and currently leads the group, Miss Jubilee and the Yas Yas Boys. Her engaging performance style, combined with the depth and power of her voice, make her one of the most sought after performers in the region. Valerie’s repertoire is heavily influenced by the female blues artists of the 1920’s and ‘30s. Valerie and Ethan also perform together as the St. Louis Steady Grinders. The Packard Showroom will be open for viewing, along with a modest Petroliana Collection and other items of (neat old stuff) - all survivors of a simpler time.
