This year, my streak is more precious to me than any other anniversary in the past. 2018 is the first year that was really tough for me. In the past, I’ve maintained my streak through my hubby’s surgeries, taking care of my Dad before he passed away and still taking care of my Mom. The craziness of our businesses never even bothered me. But, this year saw my first true injury in all the years that I’ve been running. Now, I’ve had little aches here and there and a bout of plantar fasciitis – I’ve run through the shingles and food poisoning. No biggie. I’ve been extremely fortunate all these years. This year (and I’m still not sure how it happened) I’ve been dealing with a meniscus tear since March. In the beginning, it was tough just getting that short and slow run of 1 ½ miles in each day. But, after a couple of months – it got a little easier. Then, I slowly started in 2 milers during the week. By September, I started trying to increase one day a week to a longer run. 3 After the doctor that diagnosed my tear and promptly told me that I’d need surgery or would eventually need a knee replacement – I went to a physical therapist that I knew. He said that was rather extreme and thought that therapy would help. (Even my regular doctor told me that you always try to rehabilitate first). I did therapy with him for a few months – then just started doing my exercises at home every day. I’m still doing them every day and still getting stronger. As I researched, I found out that with someone my age (60), surgery can actually do more harm than good. And, that the best thing was to do exactly what I was doing to strengthen the area around the knee. I’m still a work in progress with this. I have days where I’ll be a little sore. Not really during the run – but, afterwards. The run itself never really hurts. However, I know that I am SO much better than I was in March. The hardest part is being patient – and admitting that we don’t heal as quick at 60 as we do at 20. I’m currently up to 6 miles for my long run for the week. I’m still hoping to work up to my yearly half marathon in Key West in January – but, I’m going to be smart. If the longer runs truly bother me – I’ll continue to run low mileage as long as I have to. I don’t want to do anything to jeopardize the streak or my future running. Something super exciting happened to me in June. I was interviewed for the New York Times! They did an insert for their Sunday paper regarding exercising and staying fit. My topic was How to Make Running a Habit. I was truly honored and excited to be included! I really have to give a shout out to my Hubby. He’s been listening to me through all of this. He’s always been my biggest supporter, but this year has been above and beyond. He’s listened to the whining, the tears, etc. I am a lucky girl! Hubby is also a HUGE supporter of my streak. Whenever we meet someone or someone talks about my running – he will immediately mention my streak and how long I’ve been running every day. He’s definitely a keeper! It’s been an up and down year; but, I’m still out there. And, I don’t plan on quitting any time soon! Judy and Bob Mick 4 Sam Johnston SAM JOHNSTON’S STREAK ENDS AFTER 15,023 DAYS By: MArk WAshburne Sam Johnston, 76, from Naples, Florida, finally ended his running streak after 15,023 consecutive days (41+ years) on Friday, 12 October 2018. Started on 26 August 1977, Johnston had the 13th longest active running streak in the world as listed by Streak Runners International (SRI) and the United States Running Streak Association (USRSA) when his streak ended. He now has the sixth longest retired running streak in the United States and seventh longest retired running streak in the world that includes Ron Hill of England (52+ years; 19,032 days) as listed by those same running associations.
