Parking at the Great Barn, which is the first one as you arrive in Rivington, we start our walk heading for the Lower Rivington reservoir but head north to cross between the Upper and Lower reservoirs and continue along the Upper. We still head north but now we are following the Anglezarke Reservoir. We begin to climb gradually towards Healy Nab but, turning right through a wood which is quite undulating and muddy in places, we head back towards the reservoir. At the end of the wood we follow the road to take us around to the other side of the reservoir. We follow tracks to take us round High Bullough Reservoir and back along Upper Rivington Reservoir. At the end we climb up a road to reach Yarrow Reservoir. We follow the track alongside the reservoir, where we have excellent views towards the West Coast, then we follow further tracks and field paths back to Rivington in time for refreshments before heading for home. It will be muddy on the day but then it wouldn’t be one of my walks without mud would it? As usual I have booked the weather. Have a Nice Day! B+ : Kettlewell 2. B : Starbotton 3. A, C : Buckden Horse Head Moor & Littondale with Dave Colbert Grade A Distance 13.5 miles 22km Climbing 2700ft / 820m The Firth Fell / Horse Head Moor ridge separates Langstrathdale from Littondale and, although topping 600 metres, does not quite make the 2000 feet mark. Its highest point has long been in dispute but modern maps identify the innocuous minor height of Sugar Loaf as the true summit which we will visit today. A traverse of the ridge is fraught with difficulties in that there are many walls to cross so, on this occasion, we will cross the fell twice: from Raisgill on the way out and Litton on the way back. This is a relatively easy walk despite its length; much of the route is along well marked paths and tracks. We follow the Dales Way north-westward from Buckden up Wharfedale to the village of Hubberholme then into Langstrathdale to Yockenthwwaite before climbing Horse Head Moor from Raisgill. Following the descent into Littondale at Halton Gill our route lies alongside the River Skirfare to the small village of Litton from where we climb back over Firth Fell to Buckden. Great Whernside with Tony Ingham Grade B+ Distance 9.5 miles / 15.3km Climbing 1970ft / 600m We initially depart from Kettlewell in an easterly direction along Dawber Gill Beck but we soon leave the beck to head north east to Hag Dike Farm. From here we climb gradually, through very exposed land, from 1509ft / 460m to the top of Great Whernside at 2310ft / 704m. We then walk northwards along a high plateau for over a mile before following the lines of Black Dike and Tor Dike down to Little Hunters Sleets, 1650ft / 503m. The walk continues westwards along a bridleway to the Starbotton Cam Road which descends steeply into Starbotton. The last part of the walk takes us through agricultural land south eastwards from Starbotton to Kettlewell. If the weather is poor, or we get a bit behind time, we can cut out Starbotton by heading due south to Kettlewell from Cam Head. This would take about a mile off the walk. River Wharfe and Yockenthwaite with Dorothy Dobson Grade B Distance 8.5 miles / 13.7km Climbing1000ft / 305m We leave the coach at Starbotton to join the Dales Way. This path runs by the River Wharfe all the way to Yockenthwaite. Here we start a gradual climb past Little House, Knot Barn and Scarr House to Cray. At this point, with any luck, we should have superb views over Kirk Gill Moor and Birks Fell. We end the walk by descending into Buckden via Buckden Rake. Buckden Rake with Derek Lowe Grade C Distance 7 miles / 11.25km Climbing 650ft / 198m From the Coach Park we follow the footpath to Buckden Pike: this rocky path levels out at the foot of the Pike and becomes a wide, grassy path to Cray High Bridge where the waterfall is worth seeing. We retrace our steps to where a gate in the wall leads down to Cray where we cross over Cray Gill by stepping stones. The path continues over the road and over Hay Close to Scar House and on toYockenthwaite. The path drops down to meet the Dales Way which follows the River Wharfe, first to Hubberholme and then to Buckden. The climbing is at the beginning of the walk and not too difficult. We shall have a breather at the top and lunch will be taken with breath-taking views as I have booked the weather. Have a Nice Day!
