The project converts the historic Cole Fieldhouse basketball arena in the heart of campus into an indoor football facility adjacent to the campus stadium. The facility offers a premier athletic training experience and unites athletes, nutritionists, researchers, doctors, entrepreneurs and students to forge a bold new future. 4 | CannonDesign | 5 SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY FOOTBALL PRACTICE FACILITY 6 | CannonDesign New Hub for Football Training Intended for year-round use by Syracuse University’s football, lacrosse, soccer and field hockey teams, the new football practice facility is a straightforward, low- tech center based on a pre-engineered metal building system. Optimized with active and passive sustainable strategies, the building harnesses daylight and operates efficiently in the Upstate New York climate. The practice facility is sited to align visually with Skytop Road, and its mass is broken down by a series of overlapping dormer windows. Three volumes, arranged south to north, compose the facility: an entry pavilion, a field house and a storage shed. Players emerging from locker rooms in the Manley Field House pass through Plaza 44, celebrating the great running backs Ernie Davis, Floyd Little and James Brown, en route to the new indoor practice facility. The entry pavilion, visually linked to the indoor playing field by a large glass wall, includes space for entertaining recruits, retail sales and team meetings. | 7 U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY HOLADAY ATHLETIC CENTER Soaring to New Heights The U.S. Air Force Academy’s 92,000 sf Holaday Athletic Center enables the academy’s Division One football program to conduct full-field drills (something the team was unable to do in its previous facility) and accommodates the soccer and lacrosse teams. The facility features a full-size artificial turf football field, a viewing mezzanine and strategic support spaces. The facility helps Air Force Academy compete with other Mountain West Conference teams already offering indoor training facilities. The facility does not have a mechanical heating or cooling system, relying instead on natural ventilation that capitalizes upon the region’s predictable prevailing winds and low humidity. In summer, the interior is flushed with cool outdoor air each night. In winter, warm air is retained. This strategy has proved extremely successful as the interior temperature remains between 50 and 75 degrees despite significant temperature changes outside. 8 | CannonDesign | 9 VIRGINIA TECH BASKETBALL PRACTICE FACILITY Empowering Basketball Success Virginia Tech’s NCAA Division One men’s and women’s basketball programs utilize a 55,000 sf facility including two regulation practice courts, a strength training gym, physical therapy facilities, locker and lounge facilities, memorabilia space and administration offices for the coaching staffs. The building design, approved by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors and the Commonwealth of Virginia Art and Architecture Review Board, responds to the rich collegiate gothic context of the Blacksburg campus. The entry pavilion is positioned to address the adjacent Cassell Coliseum and aligns with the axis created by residential quads across Washington Street. An outdoor terrace framed by “Hokie Stone” faces Lane Field and the football complex. 10 | CannonDesign | 11 UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND BALTIMORE COUNTY CAMPUS EVENT CENTER All-in-One Campus Event Center The University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) Event Center is a comprehensive, all-in-one athletics venue designed as one of the premier mid-major NCAA Division 1 facilities in the country.
