She received a doctorate in mathematics, with a specialty in biometrics, from the Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C. (Biometrics is the science of mathematical predictions of medical phenomenon). She is a member of the Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart. Since 1969, she has studied cancer and birth defects, especially as they relate to low level radiation exposure and has been a research consultant in biometry, with specialty in public health aspects of exposure to ionizing radiation. She was the Senior Cancer Research Scientist, Tri-State Leukemia Survey at Roswell Park Memorial Institute, Buffalo, N.Y., 1970 to 1978 and was instrumental in founding the Ministry of Concern for Public Health in Buffalo, N.Y. in 1978. Coming to Canada in 1980, she became an Energy and Public Health Specialist with the Jesuit Centre for Social Faith and Justice, Toronto, 1980 to 1984. She founded the non- profit International Institute of Concern for Public Health and served as its Director of Research and Director of the Board, from 1984 to 1987 and as president from 1987 to 1994. The institute provided scientific and technical assistance to government agencies, citizens’ groups and labour unions relating to environmental hazards as well as a scientific publication on environmental hazards. Dr. Bertell was appointed to the Scientific Advisory Board on the Great Lakes of the International Joint Commission, 1991-1995, and to the International Joint Commission’s Nuclear Task Force in 1995. She was a consultant with the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the United States Environmental Protection Agency. She currently serves on Advisory Boards to the Great Lakes Health Effects Program of Health Canada, the Ontario Environmental Assessment Board, Global Education Associates (New York) and the NGO Disarmament Committee at the United Nations. She advocates stricter safeguards and better monitoring of health for nuclear workers and the general public, a phase out of nuclear technology for weapons or power generation, waste isolation rather than disposal, standardized international monitoring of environmental and human health, and protection of the biosphere from genotoxic damage. Dr. Bertell has published extensively in her field including the book No Immediate Danger: Prognosis for a Radioactive Earth, which was first published in 1985, and is editor-in-chief of the periodical, International Perspectives in Public Health. The Bertell archival records and the records of the International Institute of Concern for Page i Public Health were received from Dr. Bertell in 1995, 1996 and 2001. The Bertell fonds The fonds documents Dr. Bertell’s research and activities to identify global environmental hazards and their effects on public health, with special emphasis on the hazards of radiation caused by global dependence on nuclear energy. In addition, Dr. Bertell’s work and research on international human rights’ issues, the military and nuclear weapons, and women’s health are documented. The International Institute of Concern for Public Health sous-fonds or sub-fonds The sous-fonds or sub-fonds consists of the records of the International Institute of Concern for Public Health documenting international, national and local environmental issues. Notes on the structure of the fonds Information on subjects and individuals overlaps different series because of the series structure. Additional material received in 1996, 2003 and 2003 was incorporated into the existing series and required some non-consecutive volume numbering, e.g., Case Files: vols. 10 to 42, 129, 132, 133 and 137, 139 to 150. There are series which properly relate to Dr. Bertell and her work and series which are attached to the records of the International Institute of Concern for Public Health. Multiple Media Records and the Bertell library of periodicals and reports Sound recordings, video recordings, photographs, slides and posters have been transferred to the Visual and Sound Archives Division. Dr. Bertell’s extensive library of periodicals, newspapers, and other publications have been transferred to the University of Guelph via Dr. Karen Farbridge, Executive Director, Ontario Public Interest Research Group. However, a database containing descriptions of the contents of this library may be consulted here. Access Considerations Researchers are requested to sign an undertaking that they will not publish information about living persons without their knowledge and consent. Certain volumes contain individual files with sensitive information and access to these specific volumes is restricted. Finding Aid No. 2081 Finding aid no. 2081 provides a listing of file titles by series for volumes 1 to 150 of the textual and the electronic records. Also provided is a general listing of most multiple media material transferred to the Visual and Sound Archives Division. The automated version of the finding aid, a WordPerfect 6.1 document, should be consulted to locate information which appears in several series about a specific topic or individual. The search function in WordPerfect is useful for this type of action. Page ii Series Descriptions Original Writings, 1942-2000, 1.35 m. Volumes 1 to 6 and 143.
