This arose from a resolution put to the FIG at its 1994 Congress in Melbourne. But what is the Struve Geodetic Arc and what, in this context, is a World Heritage Site? Before answering these questions it is necessary to fill in some of the background to the project and discuss the determination of the parameters of the earth in terms of its size and shape.
