Rev 170411 Applications • 1997-2004 Chevrolet Corvette (C5) • Vehicles equipped with C5 batwing oil pan, GM part # 12561828 Installation Instructions WARNING: This product should only be installed by a qualified me- chanic. Improper installation could result in severe engine damage. 1. Clean parts thoroughly with dish soap and warm water to remove any contaminants that could cause excessive engine wear. 2. Dry parts with compressed air and/or a lint-free towel. 3. Raise the front of the vehicle and support with approved automotive frame stands, lift or wheel ramps. WARNING: NEVER work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. 4. Remove any fascia panels required to access the vehicle oil pan and oil filter. 5. Drain the oil tank reservoir and/or the engine oil pan in accordance with the vehicle service manual instructions. Caution: Oil may be hot! 6. Remove the oil filter. Tip: Place a drain pan under the filter during removal. 7. Remove the oil pan in accordance with the instructions in the vehicle’s factory service manual. 8. Remove the factory oil pickup tube from the oil pump and main stud using a 10 mm and 13 mm socket and ratchet, shown in Figure 1. All rights reserved. 9. Remove the factory windage tray by removing the remaining lock-nuts with a 13 mm socket and ratchet, shown in Figure 2. Note: The factory windage tray will not be used again. Figure 2 - Removing the Factory Windage Tray 10. If installing the ARP Main Cap Stud Kit, follow the instructions pro- vided with the kit. 11. Loosely secure the scraper to the main caps in the correct orientation, shown in Figure 3. For factory studs, use the included lock nuts and a 13 mm socket. For ARP studs, use the lock nuts provided by ARP and a 14 mm socket. Note: Leave the oil pickup tube lock-nut(s) detached. Using a 1/2”-drive breaker bar or ratchet with a 24 mm (15/16”) socket, begin to manually turn the engine over clockwise, shown in Figure 3, while carefully inspecting clearances. Tip: To make this task easier, place the transmission into neutral and loosen the spark plugs to relieve piston chamber pressure. Figure 4 - Rotating the Engine Crankshaft a. Use a feeler gauge set, shown in Figure 4, to carefully measure the gap between the scraper and the rotating assembly in-as- many positions as possible. Please be thorough! FEELER GAUGE Figure 5 - Inspecting Rotating Assembly Clearances b. Ensure the gap is AT LEAST 0.020” in every location. c. IF INTERFERENCE IS DETECTED, loosen the scraper and adjust the alignment until ALL clearances are AT LEAST 0.020”. d. In rare instances, the scraper may require filing to achieve the required clearance. Contact customer service if further assistance is needed. Torque crank scraper lock-nuts to 18 lb-ft (24 N·m) using a 13 mm socket and ratchet after completing adjustments. Note: Use a 14 mm socket and ratchet for ARP stud lock-nuts. Note: Do not install the lock-nut(s) for the oil pickup tube yet. 14. Re-install the factory oil pickup tube. Tip: Replace the oil pickup tube O-ring. This is recommended for higher mileage engines. Note: The pickup tube mounting hole will likely need to be enlarged for ARP main studs. Use a 7/16” drill bit. 15. Torque the oil pickup tube flange screw on the engine oil pump to 8 lb-ft (10 N·m) using a 10 mm socket and ratchet. Note: If using an oil pickup tube brace (Improved Racing part # EGM- 500) install now and torque screw to 8 lb-ft (10 N·m) using a 10 mm socket or wrench. 16. Torque the remaining oil pickup tube lock-nut to 18 lb-ft (24 N·m) using a 13 mm socket and ratchet. Note: Use a 14 mm socket and ratchet for ARP stud lock-nuts. 17. Perform a final inspection of the scraper. Rotate the engine manually and check again for interference. 18. Re-tighten the spark plugs. 19. Re-install the vehicle’s oil pan according to factory service manual procedure. Ensure that the scraper and windage tray DOES NOT in- terfere with the oil pan. Tip: Replace the oil pan gasket. This is recommended for higher mileage engines. 20. Refill all fluids to the factory specifications. Congratulations! The installation of your crank scraper is complete.
