It houses a System 360, Model 30 computer which is capable of remembering 65,536 facts. It has four magnetic tape drives and is capable of reading 1000 key punch cards a minute. It has terminals connected to it in the Engineering, Arts & Science and Education buildings. It runs 24 hours a day. One storage unit has the capacity of 1600 bits. That’s 32 times as dense as a tape recorder. Students Students across Canada protest when Dow Chemical Company of Canada recruiters came to their campuses. Polystyrene is made by Dow Chemical. This chemical is used in take-out coffee cups, Christmas decorations, some toys and napalm. Napalm is being used by the United States in Vietnam. The recruiters do not come to the U of C campus. Yellowknife replaces Ottawa as capital of the Northwest Territories. The air force, army and navy become the Canadian Armed Forces. Astronauts Gus Grissom, Edward White and Roger Chaffee are killed. Chuck Yeager established a speed record of Mach6.7 in the X-15 research aircraft. Dolby sound eliminates audio hiss. IBM creates the floppy disc. Cordless telephones enter the phone system. Researchers at Stanford University School of Medicine are the first to create a synthesis of biologically active DNA in a test tube.
